Educational Technology in a Nut Shell
• The word technology comes from Greek word
“techne” means craft or art. Therefore, the
words educational technology refers to the art
or craft of responding to educational needs.
• “all the ways people use their interventions
and discoveries to satisfy their needs and
desires”
• Educational Technology is also a complex, integrated
process involving people, procedures, ideas, devices,
and organization for analysing problems and devising,
implementing, evaluating, and managing solutions to
those problems, involved in all aspects of human
learning
-Association for Educational
Communications and Technology, 1977
Educational Technology in a Nut Shell
• Educational technology is the effective use of
technological tools in learning. As a concept, it
is an array of tools, such as media, machines
and networking hardware, as well as
considering underlying theoretical
perspectives for their effective application.
Educational Technology in a Nut Shell
• This topic gives emphasis to the five progressive states/city
imposing ICT polices and strategies in schools. Most of the
countries were found in the Asia Pacific Region particularly
(New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong).
Those country imposed their own policies and produced an
educational technology environment in their schools. They
provide facilities and venue for students’ learning and even
for teachers. They conduct trainings for teacher in the use of
technology in instruction.
Educational Technology in the Asia
Pacific Region
Basic Concepts on Integrating
Technology in Instruction
• Technology Integration refers to the use of learning
technologies to introduce, reinforce, supplement and extent
skills.
• There’s a change in the way classes are traditionally
conducted. The quality of instruction is improved into higher
level.
• The use of technology provides the opening of opportunities to
respond to these instructional issues/problems.
• In sum, Technology occupies a position (is a simple or complex
Higher Thinking Skills Through
IT-Based Project
• There are four types of IT Based Projects:
• Resource-based Project lets the students find their
own facts and information. It is more on student-
centered because teacher only step in to supply data
when necessary. More on discovery approach that the
students are the one who finds out the answer.
Higher Thinking Skills Through
IT-Based Project
• There are four types of IT Based Projects:
• Simple Creations – it is focused on the creativity of the
students. More consonant with planning, making,
assembling, designing and/or building. Creativity said to
combine three kinds of skills/abilities: Analyzing- refers to
distinguishing similarities and differences, Synthesizing –
making spontaneous connections among ideas, thus
generating interesting or new ideas and Promoting – selling
of new ideas to allow the public to test the idea themselves.
Higher Thinking Skills Through
IT-Based Project
• There are four types of IT Based Projects:
• Guided Hypermedia Project – the production of self-made
multimedia projects can be approached in different ways:
 As an instructive tool - in this approach the student
produce a power point presentation of a certain topic.
 As a communicative tool – in this approach the student
tends to do/make a multi-media presentations (with
text, graphs, photos, etc.
Higher Thinking Skills Through
IT-Based Project
• There are four types of IT Based Projects:
• Web Based Projects – students create and post web
pages on a given topic. Posting of web pages in the
internet allows the students a wider audience. They can
also be linked with other related sites in the internet. You
can promote a specific topic by the use of these web
based projects.
IT Enters a New Learning Environment
• Meaningful Learning
• This gives focus to new experience that is related to what the
learner already knows. A new experience departs from the
learning of a sequence of words or memorization through
rote memory but gives attention to meaning.
• In the learning process, the learner is encouraged to
recognize relevant personal experiences. A reward structure
is set so that the learner will have both interest and
confidence, and this incentive system gives positive
reinforcement to learning.
IT Enters a New Learning Environment
• Discovery Learning
• This kind of learning is differentiated from reception learning
in which ideas are presented directly to students in a well-
organized way, such as through a detailed set of
instructions to complete an experiment or task. To make a
contrast, in discovery learning students perform tasks to
uncover what is to be learned. New ideas and new
decisions are generated in the learning process, regardless
of the need to move on and depart from organized set-off
activities. In discovery learning, it is important that the
student become personally involved and not subjected by
the teacher to procedures he/she is not allowed to depart
from.
IT Enters a New Learning Environment
• Discovery Learning
• In applying technology, the computer can present a tutorial
process by which the learner is given key concepts and the
rules learning are directly presented for receptive type of
learning. But aside from that, the computer has other uses. In
a computer simulation process, for example, the learner
himself is made to identify key concepts by interacting with a
responsive virtual environment. The learner thus discovers
the concepts from the experience the virtual environment
provides.
• Generative Learning
• In generative learning we have active learners who
attend to learning events and generate drawing from
this experience and draw inferences thereby creating a
personal model or explanation to the new experience
in the context of existing knowledge.
• Generative learning is viewed as different from the
simple process of storing information for motivation
and responsibility is said to be crucial to this domain of
learning.
IT Enters a New Learning Environment
• Generative Learning
• Examples of this in the area of language
comprehension are activities such as writing
paragraph, summaries, developing answers and
questions, drawing pictures, creating paragraph titles,
organizing ideas/concepts, and others.
• In sum, generative learning gives emphasis to what
can be done with the pieces of information not only just
an access to them.
IT Enters a New Learning Environment
IT Enters a New Learning Environment
• Constructivism
• In constructivism, the learner builds a personal
understanding through appropriate learning activities
and a good learning environment. The two accepted
principles are:
• Learning consists of what a person can actively
assemble for himself and not what he can receive
passively.
• The role of learning is to help the individual live/adapt to
his personal world.
The Computer as the Teacher’s
Tool
• Informative tool - The computer can provide vast
amounts of information in various forms, such as
text, graphics, sound and video. The internet itself
provides an enormous database from which user
can access global information resources that
includes the latest news whether forecast airline
schedules, sports development, news
entertainment and features as well as educational
information.
The Computer as the Teacher’s
Tool
• Communication tool - it can be use as a source of
communication. Facebook and different social networking
sites can be used for educational purposes. For Example,
your teacher posted a lesson in your Facebook Group for
you to scrutinize and review.
• Constructive tool - The computer itself can be used for
manipulating information, visualizing understanding and
building new knowledge.
The Computer as the Teacher’s
Tool
• Co-constructive tool - Students can use co-constructive
tools to work cooperatively and construct a shared
understanding of new knowledge. The computer supported
intentional learning environments (CSILE) is an example of an
integrated environment developed by the Ontario Institute for
studies and education. With this, students can enter their
ideas in notes and respond to each other’s ideas. Manifest in
student-generated database are higher level thinking
processes explaining, problem-solving, expertise and
development, literacy improvement.
The Computer as the Teacher’s
Tool
• Situating tool
• The computer can create 3d images on display to give
the user the feeling that are situated in a virtual
environment. A flight simulation program is an example
of a situating tool which placed by the user in a
simulated flying environment.
Learning through Edtech 1 and Edtech 2
• Educational Technology 1 taught me things that are essential in my
chosen profession. I believe this subject is one of the most essential
and necessary to be taught. Why? because this subject will be a
great help for teachers. Some of the topics that I can still remember
are: ASSURE and ADDIE model which are used to design and
develop the most appropriate learning environment for their students.
These are made to improve the learning environment of the students.
Same with the VISUAL IN INSTRUCTION OR ROLES OF VISUAL IN
INSTRUCTION that provided me enough knowledge on how to utilize
visual and make visuals for my instruction. As well as the Dale’s Cone
of Experience which is very essential. This Cone of Experience
guides me to know the best medium to use for learning.
Learning through Edtech 1 and Edtech 2
• This model incorporates students people generally remember:
10% of what they read, 20% what they hear, 30% of what they
see 50% what they hear and see, 70% what they say and write
and 90% of what they do. It is composed of Verbal Symbols,
Visual Symbols, Recording, Radio and Still Pictures, Television
and Motion Pictures, Exhibits, Demonstrations, Fieldtrips,
Dramatized Experiences, Contrived Experiences and Direct and
Purposeful Experiences.
Learning through Edtech 1 and Edtech 2
• The same with Edtech 1, Edtech 2 taught me also a lot of things.
Through this subject my skills were improved and enhanced.
Educational Technology 2 is concerned primarily with “Integrating
Technology into Teaching and Learning”. It involved a deeper
understanding about the computer as well as application or
hands-on activities to enhance my computer skills. This skill is one
of the skills that we must possess as a future educators and as a
21st century teachers especially that we are going to teach these
what we call 21st century students/learners. Learners that are too
much exposed in a more high-tech gadgets and technology that
we have nowadays like computers, laptops, tablets, cellular
phones, etc.
Learning through Edtech 1 and Edtech 2
• As a teacher, we must be flexible enough so that we can adapt to
these changes happen around us, Classroom set-up nowadays are
changing from Traditional which is fully dominated by teacher to
CAI (Computer Assisted Instruction/ Student Centered Learning).
Be knowledgeable and we must undergo trainings and seminars to
fully equipped us with information on how to manipulate those
things. Classrooms nowadays utilize Television, Laptops, projectors
and other technology gadgets that make are life more convenient.
Learning through Edtech 1 and Edtech 2
• I learned that assignments, activities and projects should not be
boring. There are ways to make it entertaining, enjoyable and
interesting for my students and it is with the help of technology. It
gave me also an idea that we can use this technology as a tool for
communication in academic and scholastic way especially with the
use of Facebook and then we can make a group where an instructor
can place a lesson or something which is related to education.
• In some ways, there’s a lot of benefits we can get from technology, It
serves as the teachers’ tool to deliver her lesson well and to improve
the way of learning. As teachers , be updated not outdated we are in
the 21st century, we are in the same field but different set-up.
The Student after Edtech
• At the end of the subject, The students will be able to know a lot of
things about educational technology. They will realize that
educational technology do not only about using computers and
electronic gadgets but also it serves an instructional materials that
we utilize to improve the way of teaching. We can apply all the
things we’ve learned from this subject as future educators in our
field. Our skills were enhanced and developed particularly in using
and manipulating this things. Through the help of technology
integrated in education it amended the quality of teachers
because they become more competitive.
The Student after Edtech
• But it doesn’t mean that computer can replace teachers.
Computers are just tools used by teacher. Computers cannot
manipulate teachers but rather teachers are the one who
manipulate computers.
• It is the reason why we must be updated as future 21st century
teachers. We need to follow what’s on trend to keep on track. We
must be knowledgeable and skilled enough to manipulate these
technologies. Necessarily, we must explore and attend series of
trainings and seminars regarding on how to use these
technologies.
Thank you and
God bless! 
