DESCRIPTION This study-unit will continue to build on Akkadian 1. Students will develop their knowledge of the grammatical structures essential for understanding and acquiring the language. Emphasis is placed on initiating basic cuneiform writing skills, focusing on the most frequently used signs.

Participants will gain proficiency in transliterating and translating passages written in standard Babylonian and Assyrian. The course extends beyond theoretical knowledge, empowering students to engage in practical applications. They will learn to conduct research using primary sources, including display texts and archival documents. Additionally, the unit equips students with the skills to translate cuneiform inscriptions found on clay tablets worldwide, utilizing high-definition photography in museum collections. By the end of the unit, students will possess a foundational understanding of Akkadian, preparing them for both academic and practical pursuits in the field.

Study-unit Aims:

- Familiarise students with more complex grammatical forms in Akkadian;
- Enable students to manipulate grammatical knowledge to construct complex sentences in Akkadian;
- Enable students to transliterate and translate longer passages from Akkadian to English;
- Use the knowledge to carry out more extensive research with primary sources (archival tablets and display inscriptions from high definition museum images);
- Familiarise students with technical and numerical expressions in Akkadian;
- Familiarise students with different textual genres in both Assyrian and Babylonian.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify the ways numbers, weights, and measures are expressed in Akkadian and in cuneiform writing;
- distinguish between different forms of weak and irregular verbs;
- distinguish between participles for different weak verbs;
- identify complex cuneiform signs on high definition images of inscribed clay tablets.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- construct verbless, subordinate, precative, relative, and conditional clauses/sentences;
- express the form, meaning, and use of different -tan- systems;
- read, transliterate, and translate long passages taken from different text types;
- transcribe and translate from cuneiform signs published in high definition photographs of excavated tablets.
