President of UN General Assembly to undertake first official visit: travel to

the Republic of Korea and the People’s Republic of China

 

New York, 25 October 2024 —­­ The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Philémon Yang, will conduct his first official travel to the Republic of Korea and the People’s Republic of China, from 28 October to 3 November 2024.

These two official visits will underscore the UN’s unwavering commitment to strengthening global cooperation amidst evolving global challenges.

  • Republic of Korea, Seoul, (28 -30 October 2024)

President Yang will attend the annual meeting of the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (UNCPGA) which takes place in Seoul on 29 to 30 October 2024.

The UNCPGA is hosted annually by the Republic of Korea, demonstrating its commitment to international diplomacy and multilateralism. This annual meeting provides a platform for discussing pressing global issues and fostering cooperation among nations.

The President of the General Assembly will deliver a keynote address at the opening segment of the UNCPGA and will advocate for inclusive and impactful multilateralism with the United Nations at its centre.

During his visit, the President of the General Assembly will meet H.E Han Duck-soo, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea and H.E Kang In-sun, the 2nd Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea.

He will also undertake a familiarization tour of the Demilitarized Zone between the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

He will be accompanied by his Special Adviser and his Special Assistant.

The costs of the visit are borne by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea and the OPGA Trust Fund.

  • People’s Republic of China, Beijing and Hubei Province (30 October- 3 November 2024)

The President of the General Assembly’s visit to the People’s Republic of China on 30 October to 3 November 2024 seeks to place a spotlight on the priorities of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly and the important contribution of China to the work of the UN.

In Beijing, President Yang will hold bilateral meetings with H.E. Mr. Han Zheng, Vice President of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Mr. Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, the People’s Republic of China and Mr. Wang Zhonglin, Governor of the Hubei Province, the People’s Republic of China.

The President will also participate in a roundtable dialogue with youth representatives at the Tsinghua University and emphasize the meaningful role of young people in shaping global governance.

He will visit the Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydroelectric project and the Beijing Central Axis, a new UNESCO World Heritage Site.

He will be accompanied by his Chef de Cabinet, his Special Adviser, his Special Assistant and his Senior Advisor for Sustainable Development.

The President and his team will return to New York on Sunday 3 November 2024.

The costs of the visit are borne by the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the OPGA Trust Fund.
