A Camp Swashbuckler for Our Time: Girl King Reviewed!
Did you ever play "pirates" when you were a child (or a baby dyke)? Did you and your friends spin out interesting plots that (on later reflection) seemed like thinly-veiled sexual fantasies? Are you still a fan of old adventure movies starring the Hollywood idols of yesteryear? If so, you will love GIRL KING.
King of the Month: Mr. Murray Hill!
Decked in his vintage polyester 52-portly suit and trademark aviator glasses, New York's gender-bending Mr. Murray Hill covers the Lower East Side to Central Park West, entertaining and delighting Gotham's cliterati. Technodyke caught up with the hardest working man in show businesses to reminisce about the good times past, and look toward the future.
Kingdom Came!
Kingdom Magazine is a brand new Drag-Centric publication, and the first International Drag King magazine in the world. At a time when society in general is finally beginning to wake itself to the idea of a more flexible sexuality, publications like Kingdom (and the talented performers celebrated therein) are standing up and pushing the fold just a bit further -- bringing gender into the realm of fluidity in a way that is both political and sexy as hell. I chatted up co-founders Carlos and Ken Las Vegas, about the originations and future of the magazine.
FEATURED APRIL 2002: DRED KING
Mildred ""Dred"" Gerestant is a Haitian-American, multi-spirited, performance artist, actor, activist and gender-illusioning woman who has entertained audiences since 1995 with her drag persona King Dred. Portraying characters from Shaft and Superfly to Michael Jackson and P. Diddy, Dred not only thrills the crowd with good looks and smooth moves, but also educates them by deconstructing the idea of gender.
Severe Queer Revue Review
On March 14th I got to see Sammy Swagger's Severe Queer Revue at Fais Do Do in Los Angeles with drag kings Sammy (hosting and juggling his balls), several of the Disposable Boy Toys from Santa Barbara, CA, and Will Dewar, originally from NYC's Club Casanova and now located in glittery Los Angeles. For a Drag King groupie like me, it was an awesome night!!! Here's my review:
The 3rd International Drag King Extravaganza
Day 1. Friday -- After a day-long car trip accompanied by members of the Chicago Kings, I wandered into Woody's, where the the first night of performances at the International Drag King Extravaganza took place in a campus bar in Columbus, Ohio.
