🧬 What can the new WHO Blueprint tell us about the future of fungal disease and antifungal resistance? The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a new Blueprint for strengthening responses to fungal disease and antifungal resistance, outlining critical steps needed to better understand, prevent and respond to the growing threat of fungal disease and antifungal resistance. We spoke with Professor Orla Morrissey, Centre Leader at Centre to Impact AMR, to get her expert perspective on why this Blueprint matters and what needs to happen next. Orla was a contributor to the development of the Blueprint and an author of the WHO Fungal Priority Pathogens List, which formed the foundation for this important work. 🌟 Meet the Wyres Students! 🌟 Next up in our Future Leader Series, we are excited to introduce students from Associate Professor Kelly Wyres’s Lab! Kelly and her team use comparative genomics techniques and metabolic modelling to investigate the diversity of bacterial pathogens, with a major focus on Klebsiella pneumoniae. Their research explores bacterial surface antigens as targets for the development of novel vaccines and phage therapies. The team also developed Kaptive and Kaptive Web, tools now used by research and public health laboratories worldwide to identify surface antigen loci and support vaccine development. ✨ AMR Centre Member Spotlight | Dr Polly Yap ✨ Dr Polly Yap is a medical microbiologist and genomic researcher at Monash University Malaysia, where her work is advancing our understanding of how antimicrobial resistance emerges and spreads across people, animals and the environment. As a Centre Leader within the Centre to Impact AMR and a valued partner connecting the Centre with Monash University Malaysia, Polly plays an important role in strengthening collaborative research and capacity building across the region. Her research focuses on using cutting-edge sequencing technologies to detect pathogens and AMR genes, helping strengthen surveillance and inform strategies to combat drug-resistant infections. Working at the intersection of microbiology, bacterial genomics and the human microbiome, Polly takes a One Health approach to investigate how resistant bacteria move between clinical, environmental and community settings. We had some questions for Polly: 💬 Polly, how is genomic surveillance changing the way we detect, track and respond to antimicrobial resistance? "Genomic surveillance helps us detect, track and respond to antimicrobial resistance by showing how resistant bacteria spread between people, animals and the environment. This allows us and health authorities to implement targeted surveillance and interventions where they are needed most. It also identifies the genetic makeup of bacteria, which can predict antibiotic susceptibility, paving the way for faster, AI-assisted treatment decisions in the future." 💬 Why is a One Health approach essential for understanding how antimicrobial resistance spreads across people, animals and the environment? "Antimicrobial resistance doesn't begin and end in hospitals. Resistant bacteria can move between people, animals and the environment through many different pathways, including livestock, food, wastewater and natural ecosystems. That's why a One Health approach is so important. It recognises that the health of people, animals and the environment is closely connected. By protecting animal health, reducing environmental contamination and working across sectors, we can help slow the spread of resistant bacteria and better protect the health of everyone." 📢 New SuperbugAI publication A new preprint from the SuperbugAI team and reports promising results from the first phase of the project. 🧬 The study analysed data from more than 2,600 hospitalisations, using a multimodal AI approach to predict outcomes including: • Mortality • ICU admission • Prolonged hospital stay • Readmission For mortality prediction, the AI model substantially outperformed the established APACHE II clinical score, achieving an AUROC of 0.93 compared with 0.77. Importantly, the study also found that incorporating pathogen genomic information could further improve prediction, while identifying bacterial genomic features and virulence pathways associated with poorer outcomes. That’s the vision behind SuperbugAI, a major national research project led by the Centre to Impact AMR. Bringing together expertise across infectious diseases, microbiology, genomics, artificial intelligence and digital health, SuperbugAI is exploring new ways to detect, track and respond to antimicrobial-resistant infections in hospitals.
