The Friends of Europe Summit on 13 October discussed how to make Europe's clean industrial transformation both competitive and investable. The EESC's Cillian Lohan joined a session on critical raw materials and the role of circularity in strengthening Europe's resilience and competitiveness. He highlighted that the circular economy is no longer just an environmental ambition but a strategic necessity for Europe's future. While the transition requires investment and adaptation, it can deliver significant environmental, economic and social benefits. Looking ahead, the Circular Economy Act must provide a framework that rewards resource efficiency, circular business models and responsible resource use within planetary boundaries. Success will depend on collaboration across value chains and on the active contribution of all stakeholders. 👉 bit.ly/3TBSzUL

Social and circular economy joining forces for real-life impact – let's hear it from Zagreb! Over the last 25 years, the RREUSE network has helped build a strong social circular community, connecting the EU’s social and circular agendas. Together with its member Humana Nova, it is organising a 2-day conference in Zagreb to look at how social and circular practices operate in Croatia and across Europe. The event will be an opportunity to review lessons from various products streams (WEEE, textiles, furniture and mattresses), assessing what has worked, what has not, and what different regulations can learn from each other. Social enterprise representatives and policymakers will be sharing their own experiences. On the second day, participants will travel to Čakovec for study visits across the region, including a tour and workshop at Humana Nova. 📆 In person, 20-21 October More information, programme and registration ▶️ bit.ly/4y4ADjq

Cillian Lohan at the panel on Circular Economy Act - Making circularity work for product value chains Cillian is a member of the European Economic and Social Committee and has been closely involved in the ECESP since it was set up. His main points during the panel: 💠 The EU needs to focus on sufficiency, rather than efficiency. 💠EPR schemes need to be geared towards reducing waste and promoting circularity – they are not just a way to make money. 💠Market fragmentation and a patchwork of national rules and regulations are a problem. The point is not to add yet another layer: it's to ensure a coherent, clear framework. 💠All relevant stakeholders, including industry and civil society, need to be involved in implementing the EU's circularity framework.
