New research on #mpox in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, analysed 652 adults hospitalised between 2024-2025. Key findings: 🔹 84.6% of patients with available severity data had moderate or severe mpox. 🔹 Overall in-hospital mortality was 2.2%. 🔹 HIV infection was identified in 7% of those tested and appeared to be associated with greater disease severity and mortality. 🔹 Increasing age was associated with longer hospitalisation. A new AI-powered diagnostic approach could help identify more people with #tuberculosis. 💡 The newly launched AddiCAD project will combine AI-powered chest X-ray analysis with a simple fingerstick blood test to improve TB detection. Congratulations to Professor Roma Chilengi on his appointment as #Zambia’s new Minister of Health. A clinical trials specialist with extensive experience in vaccine research, Professor Chilengi has contributed to work on malaria, rotavirus and HIV, as well as to the rollout of rotavirus vaccination in Zambia. We are particularly proud to have supported his work through an #EDCTP Senior Fellowship in 2017, investigating whether a third dose of rotavirus vaccine at nine months could strengthen immune responses and provide longer-lasting protection. His engagement with the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) has continued, including through the Steering Committee of a project evaluating a new Shigella vaccine. Professor Chilengi has also brought his scientific expertise directly into public health leadership, including as Special Advisor on COVID-19 to President Hakainde Hichilema. We wish Professor Chilengi every success in his new role and look forward to seeing his expertise and leadership continue to make a difference for public health in Zambia and beyond. What if mothers living with #HIV could #breastfeed without putting their babies at risk? The #EDCTP-funded Kesho Bora trial helped show that they could. 💡 Involving 824 pregnant women across Burkina Faso, Kenya and South Africa, the trial found that a three-drug antiretroviral regimen reduced HIV transmission to babies by 43% compared with the standard treatment at the time.
