🎓 The EUAA will launch a European Master’s in Asylum & Reception Management in 2026 — a first-of-its-kind EU-level academic programme for Member State officials. 👀 The European Commission has opened its public consultation and call for evidence on the #DigitalFairnessAct. ➡️ Citizens and stakeholders can send their inputs by 24 October 2025. ➡️ The #protectionofminors is a key and cross-cutting priority within the DFA. The initiative aims to address several critical areas also covered in the draft INI report on the protection of minors, including: #darkpatterns, #addictivedesign, problematic features in computer games and unfair influencer marketing. It aims to strengthen the protection of consumers in general and of minors as consumers in particular in the digital environment and to ensure clearer, simpler rules and a level playing field for traders. I very much hope a lot of stakeholders contribute. The addictive design in the digital sphere is having detrimental effects on the mental health of minors as well as adults. Advocate General of EU’s top court says that Member States must allow legal gender recognition Today, Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union Richard de la Tour delivered his Opinion in the case C-43/24 Shipov, brought by a Bulgarian trans woman currently living in Italy, who was repeatedly denied her requests to legally amend her gender marker and name on her Bulgarian documents by Bulgarian courts. The mismatch between her lived gender and her gender marker in her official documents leads to discrimination in all areas of life where official documents are required, from access to health care and goods and services to finding employment, enrolling in education, obtaining housing or claiming welfare benefits. It is also an obstacle to her freedom of movement. In a major development, the Advocate General states that under EU law provisions on freedom of movement and fundamental right to private and family life, Member States have an obligation to legally recognise the lived gender of their nationals and cannot require evidence of having undertaken surgery. In the case of Bulgaria, the change should be entered in the birth certificate, as it is the primary document needed for changing ID documents. While Advocate General’s opinions are not binding, their conclusions are taken into consideration by the CJEU judges and are often indicative of their ruling. As the CJEU deliberates on this case, we hope that the judgment will align with this Opinion and ensure that Bulgaria and all Member States allow for legal gender recognition, without abusive requirements. Together with Bilitis, the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, Deystvie, and TGEU, we are providing support to the applicant and her lawyers in this case. The applicant was represented by Natasha Dobreva in the domestic procedure and was joined by Alexander Schuster and Denitsa Lyubenova (lawyer at LGBTI organisation Deystvie) as representatives in the CJEU case.
