In #Budget2025, Canada describes $2.7 billion in cuts to international assistance as “savings.” But let’s be clear: aid cuts aren’t savings, they cost people's lives. From Sudan to Democratic Republic of Congo to Bangladesh, Doctors Without Borders directly witnesses how reduced global aid funding leaves health systems collapsing, diseases spreading and people—especially women and children—facing deadly delays. Scroll to see what “savings” from foreign aid cuts have really looked like around the world.

#HurricaneMelissa: Our emergency teams arrived in #Jamaica last weekend and are assessing the most urgent needs after the destruction. We are reaching remote areas that have been cut off due to damaged roads and destroyed healthcare facilities. To support the response, a cargo shipment from Brussels arrived on Nov. 5 with essential supplies. Our teams are repairing health facilities, restoring water access and providing medical supplies. We are also delivering clean water and essential items, offering psychosocial support and providing internet access so people can speak to their relatives. Doctors Without Borders is able to respond quickly to emergencies thanks to our donors. Now more than ever, crises demand action.

#Budget2025 proposed by Mark Carney and the Canadian government turns away from the world when humanitarian needs are rising. Every dollar cut from global aid isn’t just an entry on a spreadsheet, it’s fewer vaccines, fewer hospital beds and fewer people receiving assistance around the world. The federal budget decides whether Canada continues or not to stand with people facing conflict, epidemics and climate disasters around the world. What message is Canada sending with these cuts? This is the voice of Dr. Giulia Chiopris, Doctors Without Borders Pediatrician. She is in Tawila, #Sudan, where our teams are receiving people fleeing El Fasher with gunshot wounds and severe malnutrition. She shares her firsthand account on the crisis and the stories of patients who recently fled El Fasher:
-
#Sudan: Doctors Without Borders is receiving as patients many of the people who have managed to flee El Fasher, including over the past few days. They tell us the city is now a scene of mass atrocities. Civilians continue to be directly targeted, without any distinction. “Children are not spared. Elderly people are not spared. Women are not spared. Civilian and medical infrastructures are also being targeted. Escaping from El Fasher is extremely difficult, those attempting to flee are victims of extortion, they must pay for their survival, and risk kidnapping, assault or worse.” Now more than ever we must #TalkAboutSudan. Watch as Michael Lawson, our Humanitarian Representative to Canada, updates Parliament:

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Canada reposted this
🚨 #SUDAN: “The arrival numbers don’t add up, while accounts of large-scale atrocities are mounting. Where are all the missing people who have already survived months of famine and violence in El Fasher?”, asks Michel O. Lacharité, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Canada head of emergencies. “Based on what patients tells us, the most likely, albeit frightening, answer is that they are being killed, blocked, and hunted down when trying to flee. We urgently call on the RSF and its allied armed groups to spare civilians and allow them to reach safety. ⬆️ An urgent alert from our teams in Sudan that's sending chills down my spine. We are not in El Fasher today, due to severe security risks and repeated attacks on healthcare facilities. But about 60 km away in Tawila, we are seeing only a few thousand people reach us as they escape the RSF-controlled city of El Fasher. When RSF took control of the city a few days ago, we were prepared in Tawila to receive large numbers of wounded and displaced. There's about 260,000 civilians in El Fasher. Why are only a few thousand able to escape? 💔 THE NUMBERS DON'T ADD UP. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about this - those that have escaped are describing massacres, torture, kidnappings for ransom, sexual violence and executions. 🔴 Civilians must be protected and allowed safe passage now. 🔴 We call on all parties with influence--regional and international--to act immediately to stop the violence and ensure humanitarian access.
