I’m deeply sad to learn of the passing of Dr. Bill Foege. Bill was a towering figure in global health—a man who saved the lives of literally hundreds of millions of people. He was also a friend and mentor who gave me a deep grounding in the history of global health and inspired me with his conviction that the world could do more to alleviate suffering. Bill and I often talked together about the future of global health. The legacy of his career is that many of the remarkable developments to come will have his imprint all over them.

Over the past two decades at the Gates Foundation, I’ve had the privilege of learning from many extraordinary leaders in global health. Few have shaped our field — or our institution — as profoundly as Dr. Bill Foege. Bill was a pioneer whose work helped eradicate smallpox and accelerate childhood immunization. But what set him apart was not only his scientific brilliance, it was his belief that public health is, at its core, an expression of human kindness. Bill advised the foundation from the very beginning. His ideas helped shape our strategies. His mentorship shaped generations of global health leaders. And his moral clarity shaped the way many of us think about service, humility, and long‑term impact. Millions of people are alive today because of his work. Countless more will benefit from the institutions, partnerships, and ways of thinking he helped build. We will honor him by continuing the work, learning from what doesn’t go right, pushing toward what’s possible, and keeping those we aim to serve at the center of everything we do. Thank you, Bill, for showing the world what determined, hopeful leadership can achieve. https://lnkd.in/guMD29kj

Access to high-quality primary health care is essential for people to live healthy, productive lives. Yet half the world’s population still can’t access basic health services. We’re proud to support African leaders and innovators as they explore the potential of #AI to extend the reach of health workers and improve access to care. Alongside OpenAI, we’re committing $50 million in funding, technology, and technical support to accelerate their progress.
