The Impact of Foreign Direct Investments, Industrial Production Index, andTrade Openness on CO2 Emissions in Turkey

Abstract

In this study, the effects of foreign direct investments, industrial production index, and trade openness on CO2 emissions in Turkey between 1980 and 2023 are investigated. To determine the long-term relationship among the variables, the ARDL bounds test is employed, while the Toda-Yamamoto causality test is used to explore causality relationships. The results indicate that foreign direct investments, industrial production index, and trade openness increase CO2 emissions in the long run. Furthermore, the Toda-Yamamoto causality test results show a bidirectional causality between CO2 emissions and both foreign direct investments and trade openness, while no causality relationship is found between the industrial production index and CO2 emissions. Based on the findings, the study suggests that the pollution haven hypothesis holds validity for Turkey during the sample period, as foreign direct investments have a positive impact on CO2 emissions.

Türkiye’de Doğrudan Yabancı Yatırımlar, Sanayi Üretim Endeksi ve Ticari Açıklığın CO2 Emisyonu Üzerindeki Etkisi

Abstract

Bu çalışmada 1980-2023 tarihleri arasında Türkiye’de doğrudan yabancı yatırımlar, sanayi üretim endeksi ve ticari açıklığın CO2 emisyonu üzerindeki etkisi incelenmiştir. Değişkenler arasındaki eşbütünleşme ilişkisinin tespiti için ARDL sınır testi, nedensellik ilişkisinin tespiti için Toda-Yamamoto nedensellik testinden yararlanılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgulara göre doğrudan yabancı yatırımlar, sanayi üretim endeksi ve ticari açıklığın CO2 emisyonunu uzun dönemde artırdığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Ayrıca Toda-Yamamoto nedensellik testi sonuçlarına göre CO2 emisyonu ile hem doğrudan yabancı yatırımlar arasında hem de ticari açıklık arasında çift taraflı bir nedensellik ilişkisi mevcut iken sanayi üretim endeksi ile CO2 emisyonu arasında bir nedensellik ilişkisine rastlanmamıştır. Çalışmada elde edilen sonuçlara göre doğrudan yabancı yatırımların CO2 emisyonu üzerindeki pozitif etkinliği ile ilgili örneklem dönemi içinde Türkiye’de kirlilik sığınağı hipotezinin geçerliliği tespit edilmiştir.
