Inspiration
As students, we’re constantly switching between apps, links, and platforms just to keep track of school. On top of that, teachers are being encouraged to “use AI,” but most AI tools aren’t classroom-friendly or easy to control. We wanted to create something that supports both sides: a place where students can stay organized, and teachers can use AI to enhance their teaching instead of replacing it. SmartStudy was built to bridge that gap — making learning clearer, simpler, and more connected.
What it does
SmartStudy is a web platform where students can: View classes and assignments, access study resources, and practice/review material
Teachers can: Create and upload assignments and view student profiles and progress
We also introduce AI in a way that’s intentional and guided. Teachers can use AI to generate practice questions or study guides, helping students review material without overwhelming them or taking the teacher out of the loop. AI acts as a teaching assistant, not the teacher.
How we built it
We built SmartStudy using Blazor Server and C#, which allowed us to keep everything connected inside one cohesive application without juggling multiple frameworks. We used Bootstrap along with custom CSS to create a clean, welcoming UI that feels easy to navigate for both students and teachers. For the AI features, we integrated an Azure AI endpoint and connected it through Semantic Kernel. This let us build structured AI interactions rather than just “chat responses.”
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was designing for two different types of users: students and teachers. They need different features, but the platform still needs to feel consistent and easy to navigate.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A clean and intuitive dashboard that feels comfortable to use. A working assignment workflow from upload, to submission, to grading.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned how to design with real users in mind — not just code. We spent time thinking about how students actually study, how teachers actually grade, and how AI can fit into that workflow without taking over.
What's next for SmartStudy
The next step is to expand SmartStudy beyond assignments and practice sets. We want students to be able to see all of their class information in one place — lessons, resources, schedules, feedback, and progress — not just the study sets.
