Launched in 2018, Next Generation Internet (NGI) is an initiative of the European Commission that aims to reshape the internet in such a way that it responds to the needs of the people it serves. As a human-centred initiative, it aims to deliver technologies that meet people’s needs in terms of privacy, trust, transparency, security and inclusivity.
Between 2018 and 2020, the Commission invested more than €250 million in NGI projects under Horizon Europe’s predecessor programme, Horizon 2020.
Under Horizon Europe, funding for NGI projects falls under pillar II, ‘Global challenges and European industrial competitiveness’, cluster 4: ‘Digital, industry and space’. Over the 2021–2022 period, in accordance with the work programme, efforts in the NGI field will focus on the following outcomes:
