The artifact section allows the LLM to surface important resources — links, screenshots, plans, and temporary documents — to the user via a dedicated artifacts panel in the chat view.

Overview

When the setArtifacts built-in tool is invoked by the LLM, it can set a list of labeled artifacts (each with a URI) that are displayed in an artifacts panel. This gives the LLM a way to present structured output beyond inline chat messages.

Key Components

• setArtifacts tool — Built-in tool that accepts an array of artifacts (label + URI + optional type) and stores them via IChatArtifactsService
• IChatArtifactsService — Memento-backed service that persists artifacts per chat session
• vscode-chat-response-resource:// URI scheme — Used for referencing in-memory resources like tool result images (screenshots, etc.)
• resolve_memory_file_uri tool — Resolves /memories/... paths to actual filesystem URIs so the LLM can reference memory files as artifacts

Setting

The feature is behind the chat.artifacts.enabled setting (preview, default false).
