"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    Hi Rajesh,

Is there a log file somewhere that would make it possible to identify which device is causing the issue?

    Thank you

What is the make and model of the computer?

I have a custom-built PC from PC Specialist, running an Intel Core i7-3770, Asus P8 Z77-V motherboard, Palit-branded NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660, Creative Sound Blaster ZxR soundcard, 16 GB RAM, SSD primary hard drive, dual Acer monitors.

Do you have any external devices (except the mouse and the keyboard) connected to the computer?

Yes, them all: USB hub, laserjet printer, scanner.

Are you using any third party security program installed on the computer?

    Nope, just Windows Defender.

My upgrade process seemed to be going okay until somewhere after the second or third reboot (I don't recall as my children were in the study at the time!) I got a quite flash of a blue screen, the PC rebooted and then told me that the it was "restoring your previous version of Windows".

Upon logging in to Windows 8.0 again I was presented with the familiar message:

    "Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

    0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

Someone elsewhere suggested it could be an NVIDIA drivers issue, or a multiple monitors issue. I already have the latest drivers installed.

Guess I'll wait, unless there is anything obvious that I can do now.

    Disappointing.
