Furthermore, we represent Luxembourg within the European Space Agency and space-related programs of the European Union and the United Nations. 🚀 A major milestone for European lunar exploration! Proud to see #MAGPIE moving forward and to contribute to this exciting journey towards the Moon’s south pole. 🌙 Congratulations to everyone involved in this ambitious mission!
A milestone for MAGPIE and for European lunar exploration 🌙 Yesterday at ESA’s Space for Inspiration conference in Copenhagen, ispace-EUROPE and the European Space Agency - ESA marked the MAGPIE mission agreement with an official signing ceremony led by Daniel Neuenschwander, ESA Director of Human and Robotic Exploration, and Julien Lamamy, CEO of ispace-EUROPE. Led by ispace-Europe as prime contractor to ESA, MAGPIE brings together scientific and engineering expertise from across Europe to investigate lunar volatiles and water ice in the Moon’s south polar region. The MAGPIE consortium includes: - Technical University of Munich, Germany - providing an instrumented drill Volatiles Sampler as a part of the Lunar Volatiles Scout - ESR Technology, United Kingdom - providing a Drill Translation Unit as a part of the Lunar Volatiles Scout - The Open University, United Kingdom - providing an Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer Volatile Analyzer as a part of the Lunar Volatiles Scout - RAL Space, United Kingdom - leading the joint assembly and testing activities of the Volatile Analyzer with the support of Open University - CENSSS: Centre for Space Sensors and Systems at the Universitetet i Oslo (UiO) | University of Oslo, Norway - providing the Lunar RiMFAX Ground Penetrating Radar - Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics at the Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic - providing a neutron spectrometer suite of Neutron HardPix and a Radiation HardPix Through MAGPIE, we are building the European operational capability, knowledge and experience needed to deliver increasingly ambitious missions on the lunar surface, while helping lay the foundations for future lunar exploration globally. ispace-EUROPE has been awarded a €65 million contract by the European Space Agency - ESA to lead the development and flight of MAGPIE. As Europe’s first lunar polar ice exploration rover, MAGPIE represents a step forward in international space exploration and commercial capability. Scheduled to launch in 2029 aboard ispace, inc.'s Mission 4 lander, MAGPIE will explore the Moon's south pole to investigate volatile deposits and water ice. This mission is the result of a collaboration between ESA and JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, combining European scientific ambition with Japanese lunar transportation technology. Last week, we were delighted to welcome researchers, innovators and stakeholders from across Luxembourg’s health and space ecosystems for the Space for Health Day at Belval. ✨ The workshop explored how microgravity research and space-based experimentation developed through the LU space ecosystem can support scientific and technological advances in life sciences, creating new opportunities to address health challenges on Earth. Through presentations, round table discussions and networking sessions, participants exchanged ideas on future research directions and collaboration opportunities at the intersection of health and space. ⚕️🌍 A big thank you to all participants, speakers and partners for their engagement and valuable contributions throughout the day. 🙌 This event is only the beginning.
