New College Science Center Designed To Increase Exchanges and Innovation Within Its Walls

Earlier this fall, students and faculty at Claremont McKenna in Southern California encountered a brand-new sight on their campus. Now nestled along the college’s eastern edge is the Robert Day Sciences Center (RDSC), originally commissioned in 2020 and recently completed by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). Inside, RDSC houses computational gene, brain, and climate research hubs, significantly advancing the college’s science program.

Tsuchiya Kōitsu and the Rise of Shin-Hanga Prints in 20th Century Japan

In the early 1900s, Japan had undergone some dramatic changes. Just a few decades before, the country had opened itself up after more than 200 years of self-isolation, and the dual forces of industrialization and internationalism had begun taking root. It was within this shifting environment that Japanese artists revived ukiyo-e, a traditional form of woodblock printing, as shin-hanga (literally meaning “new prints”).

Concrete Cars Submerged in the Ocean Aim To Revitalize Florida’s Coral Population

Off the coast of Miami Beach, something unexpected has plunged into the ocean: a series of concrete cars. Created by conceptual artist Leandro Erlich, this aquatic traffic jam was unveiled earlier this month during Miami Art Week, and inaugurates the ReefLine, a new, 7-mile underwater sculpture park that merges ocean advocacy, site-specific art, and ecological restoration. Aptly titled Concrete Coral, the installation consists of 22 life-size cars, each cast from marine-grade, pH-neutral concrete.
