Investeer vandaag in de vrede van morgen ^Cordaid 🤝 Oxfam Novib. In een wereld die steeds onvoorspelbaarder en onzekerder wordt, investeren we fors in militaire middelen. Tegelijkertijd blijven investeringen in diplomatie, ontwikkeling en conflictpreventie achter. Terwijl voorkomen beter én goedkoper is dan genezen. Maar het bereiken van duurzame vrede vraagt om beel meer dan wapens en afschrikking. Ook de onderliggende oorzaken van conflicten moeten worden aangepakt: veiligheid, wereldgezondheid en voedselzekerheid. Nederland is nauw verbonden met de rest van de wereld. Wat elders gebeurt, raakt ook ons. Een vreedzame en stabielere wereld is daarom niet alleen een morele verantwoordelijkheid, maar ook in ons eigen belang. Onze Grondwet verplicht onze regering bovendien om de internationale rechtsorde te bevorderen. At the start of the Dutch parliamentary year, it has become clear that Dutch support for Ukraine will increase. Over the next three years, an extra 327 million euros will be spent on non-military support to Ukraine, with water and energy as top priorities. The timing couldn't be more fitting, since we just wrapped up an inspiring visit that showed what that kind of support can build. Last week, a delegation from Caritas Ukraine travelled to the Netherlands to work with Dutch partners on one of Ukraine's most pressing challenges: keeping water flowing to communities during the war, while laying the groundwork for lasting recovery. The visit brought together government, humanitarian organisations, water sector experts and businesses, culminating in a strategic meeting in The Hague hosted and attended by Caritas Ukraine, Cordaid, Lifeline Ukraine, VNG International, Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken, Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat, Ministry of Economy and Environment of Ukraine, Netherlands Enterprise Agency, Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP), ZOA, Dorcas, Het Nederlandse Rode Kruis, VEI, World Waternet, WaterWorX, and other partners across the humanitarian, technical, and private sectors. For years, she believed no one could help her... Rebecca Nyejal lived with obstetric fistula, a childbirth injury often mistaken for a curse in parts of South Sudan. Like an estimated 60,000 women there, she carried it in silence, withdrawn from family and community life. Then a team of mobilisers reached her village. Drivers crossed flooded roads to bring her to Bentiu State Hospital. Nurses, anaesthetists and surgeons took it from there. Thirty women went through this campaign, run by Cordaid - South Sudan with the Ministry of Health of South Sudan and support from United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). 🌾 '260,000 smallholder farmers. US$200 million. Twelve years.' That's the scale of the new climate adaptation finance mechanism announced at the Africa Food Systems Forum last week in Kigali, attended by our colleagues from Cordaid Ethiopia, Cordaid - South Sudan and Cordaid East & Southern Africa. What stood out most: capital alone doesn't change a farmer's life. Without technical knowledge, credible business plans, climate information and market access, it doesn't stick. That's the gap our teams work in every day: connecting finance with the systems around it, so a cooperative can actually use the loan, a rural enterprise can actually reach a buyer, a young farmer can actually build something that lasts. Our five delegates have one shared conviction: Food systems become more resilient when farmers and local enterprises can access the skills, services, finance, markets and decision-making power they need to invest in their own future. Through the Dutch pavilion and discussions with organisations including International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), FAO, Equity Bank Limited and CABI, they explored how partnerships can connect local delivery capacity with finance, science, markets and public policy. 🔗 Link to article in the comments. Lebanon has slipped out of the headlines. The needs haven't gone anywhere. More than one in five Lebanese people are still displaced. Hundreds of thousands rely on humanitarian support. And funding for the country keeps shrinking. Our partner Caritas Lebanon, active in a joint response of the Dutch Relief Alliance, works across an extraordinary range of fronts: emergency relief, medical care, support for people with disabilities, agricultural training for women in crisis zones, and shelter for a group that's often overlooked entirely, migrant workers who've been displaced with no access to formal support systems at all. That work got noticed at the highest level. A Dutch government delegation visited Lebanon in August, and in early September Minister van Buitenlandse Handel en Ontwikkelingssamenwerking | Sjoerd Sjoerdsma travelled to the south of the country to meet aid workers, local authorities and residents directly. He came back struck by their resilience, and by how much is still needed. We're proud to keep working alongside Caritas Lebanon, and we're actively looking for new ways to fund that work as existing projects wind down. 🔗 Link to article in the comments.

'Mud everywhere...' That's how Arpana Karki, a Caritas Nepal programme coordinator, described what's left after a Himalayan glacial lake burst its banks on 26 August and buried entire villages. Susan Dabbous, editor at Caritas Internationalis, spoke with her days after the flood. One of the teams got stuck for 18 hours trying to deliver food to Nuwakot. Roads gone, rain pouring, no proper meal since they'd left. When they finally arrived, exhausted, their first question to Arpana was: 'When's the next trip?' She also talked about 56 orphaned children in one village, crammed into a single room. 'They know something has happened, but they haven’t really understood it yet. Perhaps they are still trying to make sense of it all and what it means to be without their parents.' Cordaid supports Caritas Nepal's emergency response, which includes supplying food, water, clothing, hygiene products, tents, blankets, kitchen supplies, solar-powered lamps, and educational supplies. 🔗 Full interview in the comments.
