I’ve worked with many NFPs where this very question sits at the heart of tension. Sometimes it’s whispered in side conversations. Sometimes it erupts in Board meetings. Either way, it’s a leadership fracture that stifles culture, decision-making, and impact. I've seen: 👉 CEOs feeling undermined or micromanaged. 👉 Boards feeling left out, blindsided or "not in control." 👉 Mutual trust break down. 👉 Everyone forgetting why they’re there in the first place. It’s not just a theoretical issue – it’s real. And it costs organisations dearly. So how do we shift from conflict to collaboration? 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀: 👉 Clarify roles – and stick to them. Boards govern. CEOs lead operations. The lines can blur – but they shouldn’t vanish. 👉 Invest in relationship-building. Not just strategy days. Create space for real conversation and curiosity. 👉 Respect different expertise. Boards bring governance and oversight. CEOs bring on-the-ground leadership. One isn’t “above” the other – just different. 👉 Name the issue early. Power struggles left unchecked become toxic. 👉 Create shared goals. Align around purpose. When the focus shifts to mission, ego often steps aside. This tension isn’t a one-off. It’s a recurring theme in my consultancy work. And while it can be messy, it’s also a powerful opportunity. Because when the CEO and Board Chair stand side by side – not toe to toe – that’s when governance gets real... and gets results. ================= 📣 𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘢 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘪𝘳, 𝘋𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘳 𝘌𝘹𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘕𝘍𝘗, 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 - 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘵 - 𝘭𝘦𝘵’𝘴 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬. Community Radio Leading the Way for People with Intellectual Disability Community radio has always been a space for underrepresented voices, and Airwaves Access is a perfect example of how the sector is creating real opportunities for people with intellectual disability to be heard—not just as guests, but as broadcasters, interviewers, and storytellers. With support from the Community Broadcasting Foundation (CBF), Airwaves Access has expanded rapidly, welcoming 25 new presenters and 48 guests over the past year. Broadcasting on 88.6 Plenty Valley FM and Gippsland FM, and now partnering with 3CR Community Radio in Collingwood, the program is equipping people with intellectual disability with the skills and platform to lead their own conversations on the airwaves. The move to long-form radio and podcast episodes has given presenters the space to explore topics that matter to their community—whether through Frankly Speaking, which discusses support needs, or A Day in the Life, where peers interview each other about their daily experiences. This shift isn’t just about longer programs—it’s about better representation, more in-depth discussions, and ensuring people with intellectual disability are at the centre of their own narratives.
