Got the bill for my 3 days in the hospital for a kidney stone: $36,363.00 before the doctors and the surgeon. How broken is American health care? Should it cost [probably] $50,000 for a kidney stone?!?! Medicare and my supplemental will cover it all. And isn’t that the point – without insurance, you die. Or lose your home.
This b.s. about just going to the ER. First of all, you don’t go to the ER for insulin or blood pressure meds. And if you do go to ER, YOU GET A BILL. If you own a home, you lose that home to pay the bill. ER IS NOT FREE.
How in the hell can an average family (who probably lives from paycheck to paycheck) supposed to have a healthcare savings account to cover things like this? One minor emergency could wipe out a lifetime of savings…Thank goodness you were covered. We have to #SaveACA!!!
Exactly, Dianne. I was without insurance (self-employed with asthma and high blood pressure before ACA, which I was able to get and afford at the age of 63. If I had had this kidney stone before that, I’d be dead. Literally. For what is actually a simple procedure (although I was pretty miserable for a month, including my Trump wannabe boss who docked me 7 days’ pay. I’m a private contractor, so I have nothing to fight him with. Been doing this job for him for almost 9 years – no vacation, no sick days – the sociopathic bastard.
Cost of healthcare is out of control; however, truth is, the only one’s burdened with “rack” rate for care are those that can least afford it — the working uninsured.
Twice monthly, I receive treatments that are billed at $23,000.00 each; Medicare/Tricare, combined, pay a negotiated rate of $2,200.00 — less than 10% of what’s billed. As I have Tricare for Life, I pay nothing out of pocket. A person without insurance would be hard pressed to pay $46,000.00 a month out of pocket.
To this day, I am haunted by an article I read shortly before ObamaCare went into effect. Woman from West Virginia had severe asthma; no insurance; couldn’t afford inhalers; relied on emergency rooms. Hubby got job that provided insurance after 90 days probation; they were counting down the days until she could see a doctor and get on a regular treatment regime. Around day 87, she had a severe asthma attack; by time the neighbor got her to the hospital (30 minutes away) she was dead. DEAD for lack of an inhaler. I have an inhaler in every room of my house, in my three primary handbags, in the pocket of every coat; I have an epi-pen on each floor of the house, and in my three primary handbags. This woman’s death HAUNTS ME! This should not happen in the USA!
The truth is, without insurance, you die. If this kidney stone had happened 5 years ago, I would have had to leave the hospital, and probably gone septic for lack of treatment. NO ONE can pay for health care in this country, unless you’re uber-wealthy. It’s impossible.
And let’s talk about the terror you live with if you have no health care options, or insurance is denied to you, at any cost. The stress alone is unfathomable; yet millions of Americans live like that, and there will be millions more if these psychopathic Republicans get their way.
You want us to “budget” for our health care? Fine, make drugs affordable not the $450 for my asthma inhaler. A ct scan or MRI or ultrasound should cost $200.
I can’t fathom what you’re living through jazziz2. Mr. 57 and I were lucky that we weren’t seriously ill until ACA and Medicare. A kidney stone – a relatively easy thing to treat – would have killed me. I don’t have $50,000 to pay for it. I would have lost my house, my ability to have credit, everything. ACA was a big step in the right direct, as was Medicare and Social Security when first enacted. It needs improvement, etc. That’s how major initiatives work. That was before RWNJ’s took over the damned GOP and sold hate in place of the American commons.
I fell out of a flying split at 16, landing on my left femur so hard I bounced, and gave myself two hairline fractures, that led to necrosis decades later.
I had a friend who had the surgery in the 80’s. She had an incision from her mid thigh on the side, up to her waist, It was 18″ long. She was on crutches fir 6 weeks, and a cane for almost a year.
Mine: I have a 4″ incision on my front left hip/top of the thigh. They put you in what I like to call the Magic Ski-boot Table, where they put both your feet into the magic ski-boots, and the table splits into to mobile leg lift things.. so they can rotate your leg almost 360Β°. They cut my skin, then moved everything below all the way to the bone (cutting nothing but the skin), then they cut your leg off (head of the femur), hollow it out to the right depth for the appliance, then drop it in, measure to make sure it’s sunk to the proper millimeter, and both side match – that was weird – more on that later…
Then they clean out your joint socket, attach a poly-metal cup to your pelvis, make sure when it’s all in place, you won’t tip over, move everything back, sew you up, stand you up, and voila! We Can Rebuild Her. We have the technology.
I literally walked out of the hospital two days later on a cane. No crutches ever. The only complication I have is there’s some nerve entrapment in my scar tissue that’s attached to my front flexor, so no more can can dancing for me.
The weird thing, when I first stood up the next day. Because my femur had shrunk 1/2″ due to the necrosis, it felt like I was falling to the right… but I wasn’t, I was even for the first time in about 15 years.
The technology for hip replacements has come really far. It’s a much easier surgery than knee replacement. My best friend had a hip replacement last December. She recuperated really fast.
Yeah – $96k. When I got the EOB I almost fainted, until I saw where it said, “You Do NOT Owe: $96,000. *whew*. I literally only paid $10 to see my Doc. Everything else was totally covered.
Bless you! I have an aversion to surgery — CONTROL FREAK! Two years into my career (1976), I started with knee problems; saw too many Marines hobbling on canes, the result of running on asphalt in boots. Got myself a sneaker chit; still have minor knee problems, however, running in sneakers vice boots saved me from surgery…
Love the opening with Sunny and Bo and our FLOTUS forever. As I was doing my morning walk we passed two newborn calves and their moms and cute just doesn’t cut it. One we were told was born last night. Still had a wet umbilical cord my friend pointed out. My daffodils are back after last weeks snow and found a few new things popping out this morning. My pansies and violas are out on the porch getting acclimated during the day and will soon go in their flower boxes and strawberry pot respectively. I love TOD, I love Nerdy and everyone that posts here, I love the Obamas dearly and I believe we will overcome. This morning I really do.
Yes, rolling down windows! Something she couldn’t do for 8 years. If I was her I would be like a dog. Riding along in the car with my head out the window and a huge grin on my face, smelling all the smells, even the bad ones. I so hope she is able to do that. π
Good morning Ms. Chips, Danny and TOD family, I hope all is well with everyone this lovely Tuesday morning. Congrats df, on being first this morning.

Gorsuch just said he would respect the precedent set in Bush v Gore. That’s interesting considering that the Supreme Court said in writing that the ruling was not meant to be used as a precedent.
I guess Gorsuch didn’t read the part of the ruling where the Court declared its ruling to be βlimited to the present circumstances,β instead of precedential in the usual course.
A former law student of Judge Neil Gorsuch, President Trump’s nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, alleges that in a course she took from Gorsuch at the University of Colorado Law School last year, the judge told his class that employers, specifically law firms, should ask women seeking jobs about their plans for having children and implied that women manipulate companies starting in the interview stage to extract maternity benefits.
He served as Principal Deputy to the Associate Attorney General, Robert McCallum, at the United States Department of Justice from 2005 until 2006.[23][2] During his time at the United States Department of Justice Civil Division, Gorsuch was tasked with all the “terror litigation” arising from the President’s War on Terror, successfully defending the extraordinary rendition of Khalid El-Masri, fighting the disclosure of Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse photographs, and, in November 2005, traveling to inspect the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.[33] Gorsuch helped Attorney General Alberto Gonzales prepare for hearings after the public revelation of NSA warrantless surveillance (2001β07), and worked with Senator Lindsey Graham in drafting the provisions in the Detainee Treatment Act which attempted to strip federal courts of jurisdiction over the detainees
The part of his career where he described himself (this morning, during the hearing) as a “scribe” and a “speechwriter.” Took no responsibility for what he was giving his bosses, as a member of the justice department. More or less he gave them what they asked for – no looking back, in his mind.

βI think that investors are kind of starting to discount the likelihood of the immediacy of [45βs] policies and the enthusiasm has come off the boil as a lot of his policies got mired in legislative process,β said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank. βInvestors are not throwing in the towel but they are resetting their expectations.β
Jacqueline, When I turned on the TV this morning, Sen. Feinstein was questioning Gorsuch about emails. He was beating around the bush and not really answering the question. At that moment, I thought about Merrick Garland, and told myself that I was not going to legitimize him by watching this hearing.
I’m having a hard time listening to him; much less watching him. His opening statement and answers seem a little dramatic. His tone is smug and condescending. He seemed to have a practiced statement that amounted to pleading the 5th.
Those feelings are amplified because he should not even be going through a confirmation hearing. He shouldn’t even be a nominee.
With you all the way on that! Had a to take a break from his aforementioned answers! Will try to catch up a bit, now. I think he just popped two pills with a glass of water at their break. Hmmm.
Media turned a blind eye to GOP radicalism for how long? So now we have the corrupt Trump and his Administration currently under investigation for Big crimes. When Antonin Scalia died Senate Republicans tripled down on their 8-year strategy of No. They brazenly refused to deliver on their basic constitutional responsibility to hear the U.S.Presidentβs nominee. βThe presumption should be that Gorsuch does not deserve confirmation, because the process that led to his nomination was illegitimate.β((NYT) GOP acted in an unprecedented way — and now they want fair play from Democrats. Republicans know this Supreme Court seat is a stolen seat. Dems must stop rewarding GOP for the sh!te they do. Whatever you think of Neil Gorsuch, he does not deserve to be confirmed.
“Auntie Maxine” has been on 45’s case from day one and in no uncertain terms. She is indeed like the A-A Auntie who will tell the truth on everybody at the barbeque and keep the nieces and nephews in line. The Auntie is the one who will be in your corner and intercede for you with your parents if needed, but she is also the one that you do not want to disappoint you. She has high standards and she expects you to live up to them; no excuses. Rep. Waters was so sweet when she graciously accepted the Auntie role that Black Twitter had been tweeting about. I also love that she does not give 45 any honorifics, he is plain Donald to her.

Thank you 57. Every time I see a photo of that child, I shudder. Maybe it’s just that I know what the parents are like, and I project it onto him? I suspect we’ll see and hear enough about his life, as he gets older, to confirm or allay our suspicions. For now, look away. π
I don’t support our Citizens suing this way.
US did a lot supporting these families.
Our History on what other Nations may see Us as acting in bad faith, to turn around & sue Us? Thousands died in India many yrs ago……Our US Company was at fault…..just an e.g.
So someone on our “nextdoor.com” site posted a petition asking folks to sign it- against our state becoming a sanctuary state- there is a bill in our congress right now. She is basing the petition on this rape that apparently occurred here in MD by an immigrant male. Now I see that Spicer spoke about it too. This is how they’ll do it- single out crime committed by only certain individuals- ignoring all the other stuff. I wrote “no thanks” to her on the website.. and so far I haven’t seen anyone on our Nextdoor admit to signing it, or speak up for it.- the petition.
This reminds me of how back when I watched the news- they always always informed us of any crime committed by anyone who was black or brown.. but seldom about crime by white folks. For every “rape” committed by some Hispanic male, I am certain we could dig up 20 more by white American males. If we needed too. This kind of shit is going to make me nuts.

Pete took photos in the elevator, etc., etc. A genius of a photographer who LOVED his subject(s).
I thought it was on the 23rd – which is why they’re trying to repeal it the same day.
Of course, my hormone patch has broken my brain and made me stupid, so…. ?
57andfemale, allowed me to share her recent Healthcare experience in the tweet below. BTW 57, I hope you are doing well and recovering quickly.
Great job ranman. Everyone needs to know about these true stories of the devastation medical issues can do to a family without good health insurance.

Looks like that tweet has been deleted. Bummer.
But as they say on crime shows, Tally, nothing is ever really deleted. So hopefully someone linked it, or copied it, or stored it somewhere, and it will reappear when needed.
Go, Unions!
We’re still marching. Same Sh.. Different Day
βI think that investors are kind of starting to discount the likelihood of the immediacy of [45βs] policies and the enthusiasm has come off the boil as a lot of his policies got mired in legislative process,β said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank. βInvestors are not throwing in the towel but they are resetting their expectations.β
Yes, we are all “resetting our expectations.”
As someone that watches his TSP account like a hawk, Donald Trump’s policies are disconcerting.
Here we go…..
I finally researched that one, after seeing “Article 50” kicked around and having forgotten what it was!
“What is Article 50? The only explanation you need to read … ”
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/0/what-is-article-50-the-only-explanation-you-need-to-read/
Yeah, it’s the real deal now. Cameron didn’t invoke it and away he went.
Thanks, meta.
I’m done watching this smug, small man. If he gets the appointment, good luck fitting in with the bigger brains on the SCOTUS, buddy.
He’s a practiced liar too,
Very.
Jacqueline, When I turned on the TV this morning, Sen. Feinstein was questioning Gorsuch about emails. He was beating around the bush and not really answering the question. At that moment, I thought about Merrick Garland, and told myself that I was not going to legitimize him by watching this hearing.
I’m at that point, now, COS. Tried to watch – and saw some good Dems trying to get him to answer – but I’m done.
Hmmm.
We pay these people to stay awake!
But I did find this on her twitter page, which I heard when he said it but had forgotten (and just replied to):
That was a definite RWNJ dog whistle out of Gorsuch’s smug mouth, of course.
[Please excuse my language.] Grassley “seems nice,” but he’s another GOP prick if I ever saw one.
Girl, you are on fire these days!! Love your tweet responses.
Ha. Thanks. Usually, I’m a bit calmer. But I’m from New Jersey – just get me riled up about a good cause and I’m “coming after ya”!
Agree!
Michelle Obama has star studded brunch with Sarah Jessica Parker, Robin Roberts, and Gayle King.
That makes me smile!
PREACH, sister! PREACH! DITTO. She is ‘spot on’. Every.Damn.Word.
It’s unavoidable, even if he resigns ….
read all 9 of them …. Trump is going to jail or justice is dead in the USA …..

Happy to see Dems now speaking Up this way.
A stolen SCOTUS seat can never be rewarded by the Senate for a #Liar45*.
thanks Obama~Care π
kaep can take a flying leap in my opinion. severals times during the campaign he suggested hillary should be “locked up” because emails-something-something and loudly kept saying “both sides suck the same” nonsense. garden variety libertarian is my guess…he helped bring about this insanity we’ll be dealing with the next few years.
My point is simple: no individual citizen should ever be the target of persecution by the President of the United States. Period.
completely agree.
In modern times, GOP started with Extreme Judges when Bork was nominated.
I agree but Conway is not the only liar in the White House
Sharing champagne and bloody mary’s. You go, girls!!

And if DT is familiar with these details, he sure doesn’t want his supporters to know about them.

True story.
Peter King. Someone please tell me what that useless SOB is still doing in Congress!
I hate to be a bitch, but Barron Trump creeps me out.
Thank you 57. Every time I see a photo of that child, I shudder. Maybe it’s just that I know what the parents are like, and I project it onto him? I suspect we’ll see and hear enough about his life, as he gets older, to confirm or allay our suspicions. For now, look away. π
What’s in a Name? π
O.M.G.

I don’t support our Citizens suing this way.
US did a lot supporting these families.
Our History on what other Nations may see Us as acting in bad faith, to turn around & sue Us? Thousands died in India many yrs ago……Our US Company was at fault…..just an e.g.

Amature Hour continues at the WH
