    I analyze the aesthetic experience of theatergoers in light of Meinong’s “assumptions” and Blaustein’s “imaginative presentations,” taking Brentano’s “universality thesis” as the background of my analyses.     Systems governed by universal invariants do not, in general, recognize those invariants. This paper resolves a persistent category error in theories of intelligence, cognition, and culture: the assumption that governance implies awareness. We derive that awareness of an invariant is not structurally necessary for persistence but instead constitutes an informational privilege that arises only under rare measurement conditions. In this essay I present this difficulty and argue that extant accounts are unable to solve it.     In two recent papers, Rose and Nichols present evidence in favor of the view that humans represent category essences in terms of a telos, such as honey-making, and not in terms of scientific essences, such as bee DNA. In this paper, I challenge their interpretation of the evidence, and show that it is directly predicted by the main theory they seek to undermine. I argue that their results can be explained as instances of diagnostic reasoning about scientific essences.
