This paper will focus Jacques Ellul’s insights onto the manner in which our modern technological society is deeply ingrained in the subordination of both humanity and nature to efficient use. Ellul maintains that our way of life is characterised by structural instrumentalism, which is in turn underpinned by a distorted theological outlook. The paper asserts that these aforementioned factors together form the key drivers that propel us towards environmental desolation. This paper asserts that no adequate fine tuning of our present (...) way of life will be possible to address issues such as climate change. What is needed instead is the comprehensive sociological and theological conversion of our society. This paper will conclude by tentatively exploring ways in which the church might proclaim and embody a prophetic message of repentance and conversion in this and other socio-cultural matters. This article argues that the contemporary acceptability of abortion is not solely due to the Liberal imperative to exercise individual choice. Rather, abortion's acceptability needs to be explained with reference to the techniques of consumer culture. This article will begin by explaining how practices in general predispose one to gravitate towards one form of practices rather than another. It will then look at how consumer practices generate a biopolitics of economic efficiency and corporeal commodification which culminates in a politics of (...) visibility. Under such conditions, even basic categories like mere existence is dependent on its ability to be displayed for public view. In this article, we propose the Fair Priority Model for COVID-19 vaccine distribution, and emphasize three fundamental values we believe should be considered when distributing a COVID-19 vaccine among countries: Benefiting people and limiting harm, prioritizing the disadvantaged, and equal moral concern for all individuals. The Priority Model addresses these values by focusing on mitigating three types of harms caused by COVID-19: death and permanent organ damage, indirect health consequences, such as health care system strain and stress, as well as (...) economic destruction. It proposes proceeding in three phases: the first addresses premature death, the second long-term health issues and economic harms, and the third aims to contain viral transmission fully and restore pre-pandemic activity. -/- To those who may deem an ethical framework irrelevant because of the belief that many countries will pursue "vaccine nationalism," we argue such a framework still has broad relevance. Reasonable national partiality would permit countries to focus on vaccine distribution within their borders up until the rate of transmission is below 1, at which point there would not be sufficient vaccine-preventable harm to justify retaining a vaccine. When a government reaches the limit of national partiality, it should release vaccines for other countries. -/- We also argue against two other recent proposals. Distributing a vaccine proportional to a country's population mistakenly assumes that equality requires treating differently situated countries identically. Prioritizing countries according to the number of front-line health care workers, the proportion of the population over 65, and the number of people with comorbidities within each country may exacerbate disadvantage and end up giving the vaccine in large part to wealthy nations. All parties involved in researching, developing, manufacturing, and distributing COVID-19 vaccines need guidance on their ethical obligations. We focus on pharmaceutical companies' obligations because their capacities to research, develop, manufacture, and distribute vaccines make them uniquely placed for stemming the pandemic. We argue that an ethical approach to COVID-19 vaccine production and distribution should satisfy four uncontroversial principles: optimising vaccine production, including development, testing, and manufacturing; fair distribution; sustainability; and accountability. All parties' obligations should be coordinated and mutually consistent. For (...) instance, companies should not be obligated to provide host countries with additional booster shots at the expense of fulfilling bilateral contracts with countries in which there are surges. Finally, any satisfactory approach should include mechanisms for assurance that all parties are honouring their obligations. This assurance enables countries, pharmaceutical companies, global organisations, and others to verify compliance with the chosen approach and protect ethically compliant stakeholders from being unfairly exploited by unethical behaviour of others. In an era of infinite distractions and relentless productivity demands, this paper presents a counterintuitive thesis: strategic laziness represents the optimal cognitive strategy for maximizing creativity and long-term performance in complex systems. Drawing from behavioral economics, cognitive neuroscience, and complexity theory, we develop computational models demonstrating that "doing less" can paradoxically yield superior outcomes through three convergent mechanisms: (1) cognitive resource conservation preventing decision fatigue, (2) default mode network activation enabling creative insight, and (3) self-organizational emergence from reduced top-down control. Following a brief overview of the gig economy, its scope and scale, we map the key ethical problems that it gives rise to, as they are discussed in the relevant literature. (...) We map them onto three categories: the new organisation of work (what is done), the new nature of work (how it is done), and the new status of workers (who does it). We then evaluate a recent initiative from the EU that seeks to address the challenges of the gig economy. The 2019 report of the European High-Level Expert Group on the Impact of the Digital Transformation on EU Labour Markets is a positive step in the right direction. However, we argue that ethical concerns relating to algorithmic systems as mechanisms of control, and the discrimination, exclusion and disconnectedness faced by gig workers require further deliberation and policy response. This thesis addresses a fundamental question in moral philosophy: What is the philosophical distinction between surrender and laziness in a universe where stability is illusory and change is inevitable? Drawing upon recent developments in ontological instability theory, fluctuational metaphysics, and fluctuational epistemology, this work develops a novel theoretical framework called "Fluctuational Ethics" that provides the first systematic philosophical distinction between surrender and laziness adequate to the reality of an unstable universe. Inferentialists about scientific representation hold that an apparatus’s representing a target system consists in the apparatus allowing “surrogative inferences” about the target. I argue that a serious problem for inferentialism arises from the fact that many scientific theories and models contain internal inconsistencies. Inferentialism, left unamended, implies that inconsistent scientific models have unlimited representational power, since an inconsistency permits any conclusion to be inferred. I consider a number of ways that inferentialists can respond to this challenge before suggesting my own (...) solution. I develop an analogy to exploitable glitches in a game. Even though inconsistent representational apparatuses may in some sense allow for contradictions to be generated within them, doing so violates the intended function of the apparatus’s parts and hence violates representational “gameplay.”. This chapter examines two basic philosophical challenges for the idea of reparations for past injustices (using colonialism as the focal point). The first challenge is that requiring people today to make reparations for an injustice they themselves did not commit is unfair. The second is that if reparative claims are invoked because of lingering injustices, then recalling the past is in fact normatively redundant if lingering present injustices can be handled by forward-looking principles. In response to the first challenge, I (...) argue that the unfairness worry is deflected if we adopt a collectivist-model of responsibility, ie, one that holds states instead of individuals to be the responsible actor. Sometimes, scientific models are either intended to or plausibly interpreted as representing nonactual but possible targets. Call this “hypothetical modeling”. This paper raises two epistemological challenges concerning hypothetical modeling. To begin with, I observe that given common philosophical assumptions about the scope of objective possibility, hypothetical models are fallible with respect to what is objectively possible. There is thus a need to distinguish between accurate and inaccurate hypothetical modeling. The first epistemological challenge is that no account of the epistemology of (...) hypothetical models seems to cohere with the most characteristic function of scientific modeling in general, i.e., surrogative representation. The second epistemological challenge is a version of “reliability challenges” familiar from other areas. There is a challenge to explain how hypothetical models could be a reliable guide to what is possible, given that they are not and cannot be compared against their nonactual targets and updated accordingly. It argues that instability, uncertainty, and fluctuation are not deficiencies to be overcome but are fundamental, positive characteristics of being itself. Consequentialism struggles with calculation difficulties and justice considerations; deontological ethics exhibits inflexibility and disregard for consequences; virtue ethics lacks clear action guidance and suffers from cultural relativity. Building upon this analysis, this (...) thesis proposes Integrative Ethical Pluralism (IEP), a novel ethical framework that addresses these limitations by integrating multiple ethical dimensions through dynamic processes that are sensitive to context and developmental factors. The EME framework reconceptualizes responsibility not as an intrinsic property of agents but as an emergent, context-sensitive function within sociotechnical systems comprising humans, AI entities, institutions, (...) and environments. Drawing from systems theory, ethics of care, process philosophy, and ecological metaphors, the framework posits that moral responsibility arises from the dynamic interactions and relational configurations of the components within these moral ecologies. It introduces foundational principles such as ecological emergence, moral gradients, contextual activation, reciprocal shaping, and temporal extension. Through multidimensional analysis—ontological, relational, contextual, and developmental—the framework offers a rigorous, adaptable tool for ethically assessing and guiding the deployment of AI systems. Case studies involving autonomous vehicles, medical diagnostics, and algorithmic decision-making demonstrate its practical relevance. This thesis investigates the perplexing philosophical problem posed by states of existence that defy traditional binary categorization, occupying a liminal space between being and non-being. Such states, where existence is asserted yet simultaneously deemed non-existence, and where non-existence paradoxically constitutes a form of existence, challenge foundational ontological assumptions prevalent in both Western and Eastern thought. A comprehensive review of existing frameworks—spanning classical metaphysics, Eastern philosophies, existentialism, and contemporary quantum physics—reveals significant limitations in their capacity to adequately conceptualize and analyze this (...) paradoxical "in-between" state. Classical logic struggles with apparent contradictions, Eastern concepts often lack analytical precision for formal application, existentialism remains largely anthropocentric, and quantum interpretations face issues of scale and observer-dependence. To address these gaps, this work introduces a novel theoretical framework centered around five core concepts: Ontological Liminality, Modal Oscillation, Perspectival Ontology, Ontological Gradience, and Relational Manifestation. This framework provides a nuanced, multi-dimensional approach capable of accommodating ontological indeterminacy, temporal fluctuation, observer-constituted reality, degrees of existence, and the emergence of being through relationships. Logical arguments are presented to establish the coherence and explanatory power of the framework, demonstrating its applicability across diverse domains, including quantum phenomena, consciousness, social constructs, and digital entities. Visual representations are employed to illustrate the core concepts and their integration.
