To strengthen societal resilience, through a productive and competitive economy, Europe needs to harness the power of research and innovation in new ways. Valorising scientific knowledge and research to address complex challenges, bringing together researchers from different disciplines and integrating knowledge across disciplinary boundaries, can drive innovation from fundamental science to market application and societal impact.

Description

Transdisciplinary approaches that bridge research domains play a key role in enhancing the impact of research outcomes.
For example, Social Sciences, and Humanities (SSH) fields are sometimes overlooked in innovation and technology transfer while their contribution is increasingly recognised. Insights on human behaviour, culture, and social change can shape ideas into innovations that are more inclusive, sustainable, and impactful.
Researchers engaged in co-creation for innovation-led impact use new methods and practices effective for valorisation. They can connect research results from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields with people’s lives and values, promote multistakeholder engagement, and develop innovative solutions that respond to societal needs.
Speakers
The panel is moderated by Maria Cristina Russo, Deputy Director-General for Innovation, Prosperity and International Cooperation, Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, European Commission, discussing with the following speakers:
- Karim Selouane, Deputy Director of European and international affairs at CEREMA
- Balzhan Orazbayeva, Manager Strategic Initiatives at University Industry Innovation Network (UIIN)
- Esther De Smet, Senior Policy Advisor at Central Research Department of Ghent University
Background
The Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission continues to organise throughout 2026 a series of online EU Knowledge Valorisation Talks. The Talks tackle policy debates on knowledge valorisation or showcase inspiring practices at national or regional level related to academia-industry collaboration, intellectual asset management, standardisation, societal impact of research or citizen engagement.
