🎗️It’s #CervicalCancerAwarenessWeek and a good moment to remember that prevention saves lives.   Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet it remains a significant public health challenge across Europe. The good news? We already have powerful tools to stop it: HPV vaccination and organised cancer screening.   💉 HPV vaccination works. Vaccination against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is safe, effective, and life-saving. Through the #EUCancerPlan the EU is stepping up action against vaccine-preventable cancers -increasing HPV and Hepatitis B vaccination uptake, reducing disease burden, and protecting future generations.   🔍 Screening saves lives too. HPV vaccination alone isn’t enough. That’s why organised cervical cancer screening remains essential. Next week, #ECDC Director Pamela Rendi-Wagner will welcome the WHO Regional Director for Europe, Hans Kluge, for the signature of a renewed collaboration agreement. This agreement reinforces our long-standing collaboration to improve global health security preparedness and response. This #CervicalCancerAwarenessMonth, putting some spotlight on good practices from around Europe. After highlighting the great results of the vaccination programme in Denmark (study available in Eurosurveillance), time for Norway. "The HPV variants that have caused about 75 percent of all cervical cancer in Norway are almost non-existent among young women who were vaccinated in the 7th grade and have attended screening. Among the first vaccinated cohorts, the proportion is 0.0 – 0.1 percent. This is shown by new analyses from the Cervical Cancer Screening Program at FHI." 📢 New ECDC public health considerations on doxycycline (doxy-PEP) for STI prevention. Bacterial sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) continue to rise across Europe. Between 2019 and 2023, reported cases increased by 𝟭𝟲% 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗹𝗮𝗺𝘆𝗱𝗶𝗮, 𝟭𝟯𝟴% 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗵𝗼𝗲𝗮, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟱𝟯% 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘆𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘀 - with men who have sex with men among the most affected groups.   We have published 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 on the use of doxycycline after sex (known as 𝗱𝗼𝘅𝘆-𝗣𝗘𝗣) - a single 200 mg dose taken within 24 hours (and no later than 72 hours) after condomless sexual contact. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀: ➡️ Doxy-PEP can help 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗹𝗮𝗺𝘆𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘀 in specific groups, particularly 𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘅 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗧𝗜𝘀. ➡️ Gonorrhoea is different - in most European settings, high levels of tetracycline resistance mean doxy-PEP is 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗵𝗼𝗲𝗮 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. ➡️ 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 - wider use could affect not only STI bacteria, but also other bacteria in the body and the wider community. Based on the current evidence, 𝗘𝗖𝗗𝗖 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝘅𝘆-𝗣𝗘𝗣 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. Any use should be considered 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 by clinicians, and aligned with national guidance. Where it is used, it should 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 - including regular testing, vaccination, HIV prevention, partner notification, and strong surveillance of both STIs and antibiotic resistance. 👉 Thoughtful use of new tools, alongside proven prevention measures, is key to protecting both individual health and the effectiveness of antibiotics for the future.
