As the situation in the Middle East begins to stabilise, the focus shifts from immediate response to long-term readiness. Moments like these offer organisations a critical opportunity to pause, reflect and strengthen their approach to risk. Investing in resilience and robust crisis planning is no longer optional, it’s essential for navigating an increasingly complex and unpredictable global landscape. Those that use this window to reassess, adapt and prepare will be better positioned to respond to whatever comes next. Delighted to have contributed to this feature of Airmic (Association for Insurance & Risk) News and be part of the conversation on building stronger, more resilient organisations. 𝗖𝗘𝗥 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀: what does resilience actually look like, not in policy documents, but across operational sites, leadership teams, communications flows and decision-making under pressure? That practical lens sits at the center of the upcoming webinar on CER Directive 2026 with Gautier Porot KSS, who will focus on - how governance and decision rights function during disruption - how business continuity connects headquarters with operational delivery sites - what effective crisis response capability looks like beyond plans and checklists - why exercising reveals gaps early, before a real incident does The discussion is designed around operational realities organizations face in practice, including coordination challenges, escalation pressure and maintaining continuity across essential services during disruption. Ricus Groenewald and Sebastien Bedu make an important point in their latest article on crisis readiness: you cannot build preparedness in the middle of a crisis. Recent events in the Middle East showed that the real differentiator under pressure is not the existence of a plan, but whether organizations can actually execute: - make decisions quickly, - communicate clearly, - support people consistently, - and adapt as uncertainty evolves. What many organizations are facing today is not a single crisis moment, but a prolonged “grey zone” where operations continue while risk constantly shifts. The organizations that responded best were not necessarily the most resourced. They were the most prepared, with simple, rehearsed processes and people who already knew what to do. A timely reflection on what crisis readiness really means in today’s operating environment. Psychological safety can’t be switched on in the middle of a crisis. As Morgan MacDonald explains in this moment from our recent webinar on Mental Health Through Prolonged Conflict, stability at work has to be built before pressure peaks, so it’s already there when uncertainty, conflict and emotion surge. In the context of ongoing global crises, including the situation in the Middle East, many leaders are asking how to respond now. But the harder truth is this: teams don’t stabilize during a crisis; they stabilize because of what was built beforehand. When uncertainty escalates, people don’t suddenly become more resilient. They rely on what feels predictable, safe and consistent. And if that isn’t already in place, fragmentation follows. Watch the full webinar recording to explore why psychological safety is a leadership capability, and a risk‑reduction strategy, not a last‑minute intervention: https://okt.to/Hkw2VW #Leadership #PsychologicalSafety #MentalHealthAtWork #CrisisLeadership #GlobalWorkforce

Why were two cruise ship outbreaks, one linked to hantavirus and the other to norovirus, treated so differently? International SOS Dr Katherine O'Reilly explains a simple reason why the hantavirus cruise wasn’t put under lockdown was the nature of hantavirus itself. She shared how hantavirus has a long incubation period (up to 8 weeks) and is not associated with rapid, widespread transmission. Norovirus, on the other hand, is highly contagious, with symptoms typically appearing within 12–48 hours. They are in very different leagues. While the overall risk to the public remains low, there are still unknowns, and the situation warrants close monitoring.
