Mininet creates a realistic virtual network, running real kernel, switch and application code, on a single machine (VM, cloud or native), in seconds, with a single command. Because you can easily interact with your network using the Mininet CLI (and API), customize it, share it with others, or deploy it on real hardware, Mininet is useful for development, teaching, and research. Mininet is also a great way to develop, share, and experiment with Software-Defined Networking (SDN) systems using OpenFlow and P4. Mininet is actively developed and supported, and is released under a permissive BSD Open Source license. We encourage you to contribute code, bug reports/fixes, documentation, and anything else that can improve the system! Links are virtual ethernet pairs, which live in the Linux kernel and connect our emulated switches to emulated hosts (processes).

VirtualBox is a powerful open-source full virtualization software that allows a user to run one or more “guest” operating systems simultaneously inside “virtual machines” on a single physical “host” machine. NET-Simulator was created to help lecturers and students in the study of computer networks. Students can build virtural networks in the virtual environment provided by NET-Simulator. These devices are controlled by means of command line interface.

xenamo is the XEN Administration and Monitoring toolsuite for XEN Clusters.

Instead of requiring cygwin and all it's dependencies, I'm going to build Dynamips on MinGW. I am currently using a fork of the latest GIT source. So far, I've been able to run things that I can run with the Cygwin version, and some of the broken features are on par. I've also been able to merge in the 'unstable' PowerPC core which can run things the 'stable' cannot. Transport wise, I've gotten it to talk with pcap and UDP. I have the groundwork to make it dynamic so that pcap isn't required to run it, so you can run dynamips without installing anything. I hope to add some different underlying networking connections.

Introduces packet latency and loss between two TUN/TAP interfaces for network simulations.

MQNIC ( Message Queue NIC ) Virtual Link Layer The Message Queue NIC project provides a virtual link layer for qemu/kvm based virtual machines. The virtual link layer provides transport using the Apache ActiveMQ message server or other message bus and eliminates the need for external IP infrastructure to support VM deployments. Based on the ivshmem technology originally developed by Cam Macdonell the mqnic drivers use zero copy vm<->host data transfers and the apache message server to provide low latency, high bandwidth IP support for virtual data centers while simplifying the provisioning of hosted IP. Because the Message Queue NIC appears as a standard IP device on the target machine the integration of MQNIC and traditional IP routing is completely managed by the standard IP routing tools and infrastructure. Transport security is handled by the MQ server which supports multiple levels of encryption and authentication.
