From deepfakes to digital abuse, technology is transforming how women are targeted - and how truth is challenged. And the danger is not limited to these attacks – it is also found in the silence they are designed to produce from their targets. Artificial intelligence is now making easier to manufacture, scale, and sustain that silence. The urgency of these shifts was at the centre of discussions at the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), Women Holding the Line: Storytelling & Safety in an Age of AI, a side event convened in partnership with BBC Media Action and PeacePays.ai. Around 60 leaders from across the globe, journalists, activists, technologists, policymakers, and funders gathered to examine how emerging technologies are reshaping both risk and resilience for women in public life. 85% of women globally have experienced or witnessed digital violence. Today BBC Media Action is bringing together an expert panel at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Global Partnerships Conference to explore how technology can reshape narratives and power structures toward a gender-transformative future – not only mitigating harm but challenging the norms and systems that underpin violence against women and girls. As digital spaces continue to shape how we live, work, and connect, conversations around online safety, accountability, and safeguarding have never been more important. Expect insights from global partners working to address this rapidly evolving challenge: Alexandra Robinson, UNFPA, Technical Advisor for gender-based violence, Leonora Tima, Gender Rights in Tech (GRIT), Founder and our own Muthuri Kathure, BBC Media Action Senior Advisor Information Integrity, with host: BBC Global Correspondent, Megha Mohan #GlobalPartnershipConference #TechnologyAndGBV #OnlineSafety #GenderEquality #TFGBV

We’ll be deep diving into technology-facilitated gender-based violence tomorrow at our side event at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Global Partnership Conference. We’re thrilled that global experts and partners from across sectors are coming together to share knowledge, challenges, and solutions in pursuit of safer digital environments for women and girls. While technology can facilitate harm, it also has the potential to support prevention, protection, reporting, and education when designed and governed responsibly. Thank you in advance to our panellists taking part in this important discussion: Alexandra Robinson, UNFPA, Technical Advisor for gender-based violence, Leonora Tima, Gender Rights in Tech (GRIT), Founder and our own Muthuri Kathure, @BBCMediaAction, Senior Advisor Information Integrity, and our host, BBC Global Correspondent Megha Mohan #EndGBV #DigitalRights #OnlineSafety #GlobalPartnershipConference

"Once the truth is out, it’s harder to ignore.” Mercy Mulenga is a journalist at Yar FM Radio in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province. She trained under BBC Media Action’s MOTO Initiative, which supports female journalists in developing public interest journalism skills. “I'm committed to covering the issues that matter most to my community, ranging from health and family planning to the environment and social costs of mining,” says Mercy Recently, she investigated a toxic waste leak from a local mine into the Kafue River, uncovering severe pollution that left local farmers with poisoned vegetables and no compensation. “I was shocked when I saw how bad the river and the land were polluted,” says Mercy. “The investigation revealed not only environmental destruction, but also a painful gap in justice and compensation for the affected farmers.” Click here to learn more about our work📱 https://bbc.in/4cR8DaD #BBCMediaAction #MediaForGood #WomenInJournalism #PursuitOfTruth #WorldPressFreedomDay Mercy Mulenga

From forecasts to frontline action! 🌏 We brought together over 25 government and non-government organisations and around 50 hydrologists, meteorologists, communicators and development professionals from across Asia-Pacific for a regional workshop, Communication for Action: Strengthening Weather and Climate Information Services (WCIS), last month. Aimed to strengthen regional collaboration and partnerships, this event created an engaging platform to share learning, and explore how effective communication can help communities better prepare for climate and weather-related risks. Stronger weather and climate information saves lives and livelihoods – find out more on our website. 👉 https://lnkd.in/gpRWW2qh #BBCMediaAction #WISER #ClimateAction #WeatherServices #ClimateCommunication #WCIS #ClimateResilience

Radio is saving lives on Lake Victoria. Early weather information shared through radio helps fishing communities prepare for changing conditions on the lake — often before the day even begins. More engaging and understandable radio programming has reduced deaths from drowning because people know when it's safe to go out, and when to stay home. It is also helping people plan for the fishing season — preparing harvests, repairing boats, accessing markets, and avoiding losses. 🔗 Find out more about how trusted information supports communities around the world: https://bbc.in/4d7oO5b #BBCMediaAction #MediaForGood #PursuitOfTruth #ClimateAction

For too long, female journalists in Somalia have faced systemic barriers to leadership. But with our support, they have learned to overcome the barriers. As we look back at our progress over the last year, one thing is clear: the future of public interest content in Somalia is increasingly female, digital and resilient. In Somalia we aren't just teaching journalism, we are investing in its information ecosystem. We’re delighted to share that our children’s audio show in Gaza, "Storytime with Zaza and Zuzu", has bagged the WAN-IFRA Middle Eastern Digital Media Award for the Best Use of Audio! The jury described the series as “an excellent example of how journalism can connect meaningfully with listeners”, praising its carefully crafted soundscapes, strong scripts and believable children’s voices. Aimed to provide educational entertainment and psychosocial support, the show uses audio storytelling to create moments of safety, connection and emotional relief in wartime. In its first season, it reached more than 25,000 children in over 200 listening sessions in Gaza; today, we’ve produced over 80 episodes that are now airing for Palestinian children across the West Bank and Gaza. “Taking action against abuses is extremely difficult because those in positions of authority are often the same individuals responsible for handling complaints,” shares a woman journalist from Tanzania. “Many women find it hard to report such cases, leading some to resign, step down from leadership roles, or move from one media organisation to another in search of a safer working environment.” Sexual harassment in media is a pervasive issue – yet it frequently goes unreported. In 2025, we partnered with WAN-IFRA WIN and City, St George's University of London to conduct a multi-country study examining how the situation in media workplaces has evolved over the last several years, and what more needs to be done. Join us for the official report launch: findings, expert insights, and an honest conversation on solutions that can create safer, more inclusive media workplaces. 📌 Register now: https://lnkd.in/gYQz--6C #sexualharassment #mediadevelopment #newsroomsafety #BBCMediaAction WAN-IFRA WIN WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers

“This profession is very challenging, especially as a female,” says Homayara Faruque from DBC News. A safe, respectful media workplace should be non-negotiable, but an upcoming report reveals just how little has changed in the last five years for female journalists. BBC Media Action worked with WAN-IFRA Women in News and City St Georges, University of London to survey female journalists around the world, including in Bangladesh, to expose the true scale of sexual harassment in media workplaces. In Bangladesh, 15% of journalists reported workplace sexual harassment, with women facing far higher levels of verbal, online and physical abuse than men. We are equipping female journalists in Bangladesh, with practical skills to respond to harassment and support colleagues.
