AI can now design toxins, viruses and other potential bioweapons — how worried should we be? I spent a couple of months putting that question to more than 20 scientists, policy researchers and even military personnel. The short answer: the risk is real. As one protein designer told me, “The tools that have already been published are sufficient starting points for people to get up to no good.” But there’s little agreement on what to do about it. Many scientists — including some leading figures in biological AI — argue that the potential benefits (from drugs to vaccines to biofuels) still far outweigh the risks. Others say the pace of progress means it’s time to seriously consider limits on models and/or training data, before it’s too late. What came through most strongly, though, was the scale of the uncertainty. Even experts in the field don’t yet know how worried we should be.
