Mission Statement: Our group is focusing on a Second Life fantasy island set in the period of medieval England. We are exploring its sense of community and analyzing how a roleplay community functions. We want to know what makes Dee, Dee and how this medieval community comes together to form the cosmopolitan canopy. You can teleport in world to DEE 252,49, 61.
Take a Tour of Dee: Isle of Dee
Dee is Different, Dee is Unique, Dee is Dee
Isle of Dee: Located in the Tudor age: somewhere between 1500-1600AD. The Isle of Dee is said to be located in the Celtic Sea, but nobody knows exactly where.
It has become known as ‘The Forgotten Isle’, for it is often shrouded by mists and washed by difficult currents: shipwrecks are a frequent occurrence, and the safe arrival of a captain who has mastered th
e route is a cause for celebration. Dee is an Isle of humans, of civilisation, work and play, art and music; but here also live elves and fae, sprites and dragons, wolfmen and merfolk. For what the world does not know is that a strange and chaotic magic manifests here.
On the mainland of England and in the great cities of Europe human civilisation develops and innovates and the old ways are pushed aside, but on Dee the creatures of magic still abound: creatures that cynical man consigns to folktale and imagination.
Here on the Isle of Dee, creature, different races, and genders come together with similar goals and ambitions to form a community uniquely their own. Dee is a roleplaying community for many kinds of beings. It is a land where humans live alongside the fantastical creatures that filled the medieval imagination. We ask our roleplayers and visitors to show respect and tolerance to all who visit, live and play here.
Rules of Dee:
1) Respect. All Vistors and roleplayers on the Isle of Dee are required to behave respectfully towards others. All roleplay must be consensual. If you find yourself in an RP which you find uncomfortable, inappropriate, or offensive, and there is no way to RP your way out of it, IM the other player(s) politely with your concerns, and if need be walk away.
2)It is forbidden to use the ‘display names’ feature of secondlife to impersonate another avatar.
Griefing. All griefing is forbidden. This includes, but is not limited to, harassment, gesture spam, use of enhanced weapons, OOC begging for money, inappropriate nudity: in short, any behaviour that causes persistent offence to others.
3) Riding or flying around in prim vehicles, or riding prim animals other than horses (not winged) or donkeys – as would be natural in our period – is not permitted. If there is a good -rp- reason for the use of an appropriate prim vehicle, please check with us beforehand.
4) Age play. No age play is allowed.
5
) Private homes. Real life rules apply. An unlocked door is not a licence to enter someone’s home or rented room.
6) Sex and nudity. Nudity is not permitted except in private rented homes. Bits must be covered at all times. Please keep sexual roleplay in IM, never in local chat, even within your own home. SL walls are not chatproof!
7) One must always be in character.
Rules form a community, without rules a community would be filled with chaos. Through thorough observations we have found that the Isle of Dee conducts itself in a respectful manner. The avatars within Dee understand these rules, so there is not obscene behavior.
“To be part of the community here, you will need to be an appropriate character in appropriate costume. We are a medieval fantasy land. Your character must be believable to others, within that medieval fantasy framework. There are a number of races that are accepted unconditionally, and others by application, and a comprehensive list of these can be found on our Races and Appearance page. Please read this information BEFORE developing your character for Dee, and talk with us if there is any doubt about your character’s acceptability, as finding out you have spent time and money on an unacceptable character causes disappointment for you, stress for us, and wastes everybody’s time. “

Role Play : Role Play is what makes Dee, Dee.
Role play is simply pretending to be someone or something to simulate an experience, usually interacting with others doing the same. The simplest ‘game’ is just a gathering of friends, engaging in a common tale. I personally feel that the concept of role playing not only makes Second Life more realistic, but it allows people within communities to bond with one another. Role playing also allows avatars to experience moments and opportunities without real life limitations. For example, in the real world, the 18th century has passed, sci fi adventures can only be found in movies, and doing things that are just not possible or even acceptable in real life are a limitation. In second life avatars can do what they please and these limitation are no longer a factor. Unlike real life which limits the extent of presentation changes to represent a role, Second Life affords endless ways to represent a given role, a character with credibility.
Types of role plays common in Isle of Dee-
Periodic re-enactment – Ancient Egypt, Medieval, Empire, 18th century, 19th century, 1950’s -you name it! People gather together to live out the era once was in the real world. The clue is to be as authentic as one can. Usually not games. The emphasis on character outfit and manners. Usually Literate type settings.
Fantasy Typically involves more creative role-playing in fairytale like settings.
Events and Gatherings: Brings the citizens of Dee together. Citizens come together with their shared interests and form positive gatherings that directly relate to their culture.
Everything from weddings to dance parties, the Isle of Dee has it.
Elders: The elders are there to help those in need, resolve conflicts, and be the voice of reason to whatever issues may arise throughout the community. The elders have been here since the beginning, they are the leaders of the community in which members look up to. They also form events and gatherings that are vital to the Isle of Dee’s community and satisfaction.
Finding the Cosmopolitan Canopy:
We believe that we successfully have found a cosmopolitan canopy in the isle of dee. The people and creatures of Dee have come together for the past 5 years to form a community. Real life people from all around the world come together in Dee with similar interests; to live and role play in a medieval like ambiance.
The people behind the avatars come from all sorts of backgrounds; race, gender, and age. When they meet in the Isle of Dee everyone’s background is diminshed, and happiness through the shared interest of role play and past medieval culture is the only thing that matters.
The lobby within the isle of dee is the heart of Dee itself. The lobby is where almost all gatherings, social events, and role playing take place.if one truly wanted a visual of what a cosmopolitan canopy is, the lobby of dee would be an excellent example of what a cosmopolitan canopy should be and look like.
If an avatar is searching for a place of community, with friendly citizens, as well as a comfortable like setting, they are in luck. The Isle of Dee is a place where one will not feel like an outcast, instead they will feel part of a community.
We believe that we have successfully found the cosmopolitan canopy within the Isle of Dee. The definition of a cosmopolitan canopy involves people of all different genders, races, ethnic backgrounds, ages, and different paths of life to come together and share a common goal or interest . We have found a simple equation for the Isle of Dee…
