Recovery and resilience: Strengthening communities in south Lebanon

Stability in south Lebanon was deeply shaken by the intense hostilities of 2023–2024. Many people were displaced, homes and livelihoods were lost, and the impact remains visible today. While the situation has improved since the November 2024 cessation of hostilities agreement, full stability has yet to return. The destruction is evident – not only in damaged buildings and businesses, but also in people’s faces. The people of the south are known for their resilience, yet they deserve to feel supported as they rebuild their lives.

Across towns and villages, UNIFIL peacekeepers continue to work with the Lebanese Armed Forces and local authorities to help communities recover after months of tension and displacement.

From repairing damaged roads and clearing unexploded ordnance to supporting schools, hospitals, and restoring access to essential services — these efforts go beyond physical reconstruction. They help restore confidence and a sense of normal life.

Each repaired road makes it easier for families to return home. Every reopened school brings back hope and routine for children. Medical and dental teams bring essential care closer to communities, while veterinary support helps protect livelihoods. Each coordinated patrol contributes to strengthening security and stability. And most importantly, every interaction with people helps rebuild trust and connection.

These many small initiatives stand with the people of the south. However modest, they reflect a collective effort to restore stability and strengthen resilience.

Today, October 10th, is Mental Health Day. This year, the day is devoted to “Access to services – mental health in catastrophes and emergencies,” highlighting importance of psychosocial support to communities affected by the crisis, and those who provide necessary assistance during the crisis and in its aftermath.

The Ministry of Health of Lebanon has developed a platform for people to access resources they may need in a crisis.

These resources and UNIFIL’s ongoing support in the south remind us that recovery begins not only with rebuilding places, but also with restoring a sense of hope and connection among people.
