Daniel Borel is a Swiss[1] businessman and co-founder of the Swiss-American technology firm Logitech, and later sat on the board of Nestlé. He attended the 2004 Bilderberg meeting.
Education
In 1973, Borel received an engineering degree in Physics from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland, and in 1977 a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from Stanford University.[2] He returned to Switzerland the same year.
Business
Borel co-founded Logitech at his father-in-law's farm in 1981 with Pierluigi Zappacosta and Giacomo Marini.[3] He was Logitech's Chairman 1982 to 2008, and the company's CEO from 1982 to 1988,[1] and again from 1992 to 1998. He took the company on the Swiss stock exchange [1][3][4] and on the Nasdaq in 1997. As of 2023 he was as Chairman Emeritus on Logitech's board of directors.[1][5][6]
In September 2024, Borel failed in his attempt to oust Chairperson Wendy Becker, having accused her of failing to provide leadership. Borel, who still owned a 1.2% stake, said the Swiss-American company had not adjusted rapidly enough to trends like artificial intelligence or the "post pandemic" environment.[7]
Covid
In March 2021, Borel opined that what is particularly frustrating is that "science has never really been taken as seriously as it would have been necessary to prevent a lot of suffering and to keep the economic damage to a minimum...As a result, we are running after the crisis again and wasting billions of francs in the process."[8]
While not explicitly saying out loud how which technology was to be used - presumably vaccine passports and universal surveillance - he said that "now it is a matter of doing better and learning from countries that are coping better with the crisis, even though they, like Switzerland, have had a bad start". Borel was particularly impressed by Israel. "The belief in science and technology has led to the fact that Israel has made progress in vaccination and has left Switzerland far behind."[8]
Other positions
Borel was a member of the Nestlé Board of Directors from 2004 to 2016.[1][9]
In September 2010, Borel, a supporter of the collaboration of Logitech and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, opened the Daniel Borel Innovation Center on the campus of the university's "Quartier de l'Innovation".[10]
