Own words
The Population Institute was founded by Rodney Shaw, a Methodist minister, in 1969. Under his leadership, the Population Institute worked in the 1970s to ensure that governments at all levels—federal, state, and local–would commit to improving access to family planning and reproductive health care in the U.S. The Institute also worked vigorously to educate policymakers, the media and the general public about the crucial importance of expanding access to family planning and reproductive services in the developing world.[1]
In addition to its work on public policy, the Institute enlisted the support of the entertainment community in striving to advance public understanding of, and support for, reproductive health and rights. As part of that effort, the Institute helped to pioneer the use of radio and television serial dramas—and other forms of entertainment education—as a vehicle for improving public understanding and acceptance of family planning.
In 1980, recognizing the significant progress that had been made in the U.S., the Institute’s board of directors voted to focus the organization’s efforts on improving access to family planning and reproductive health services in developing countries.
Global Population Speak Out
Global Population Speak Out (GPSO) is its special project. Founded by John Feeney, PhD, an ecological writer and activist based in Boulder, Colorado, United States, GPSO is designed to boost public discussion of human population as a key factor in the struggle for sustainable living on earth.
The project has three stages. First, a pledge letter explaining GPSO is endorsed by a group of high-profile scientists, activists and celebrities. Over the years, endorsers have included scientists such as Paul R. Ehrlich, and Dennis Meadows. The letter is distributed to people interested in human population dynamics, urging them to speak out publicly during the month of February about the growing human population. Scientists, representatives of environmental NGO’s, science writers and activists, along with ordinary concerned citizens are targeted. Finally, the recruits are asked to report their project activities back to the GPSO coordinator, who posts them on the GPSO website.

Over the years, the Institute has become more shy in revealing the people involved. Board of Directors (2007), Executive Committee, Board Members, Public Advisory Committee, and International Advisory Committee[2][3][4][5]
