Portuguese law professor, company director and former Ambassador to the UK who attended the 1956 Bilderberg meeting.

Rui Ennes (or Enes) Ulrich was Portuguese law professor, company director and diplomat.[1] He attended the 1956 Bilderberg meeting.

Background

He comes from the Ulrich family, linked to banking and architecture, oringially from Hamburg, who had settled in Portugal in the mid-eighteenth century. His father João Henrique Ulrich, Jr, was a business manager and academic. His mother, Maria Cristina d'orta Ennes, was daughter of Guilherme José Ennes, businessman and director of Banco de Portugal.

Education

He studied law at the University of Coimbra from 1889, ending up with a doctorate in 1906.

Career

In 1911, he was elected by the jurists as the first substitute member for the Junta do Crédito Público. He was board member of the Banco de Portugal between 1914 and 1927[2] and delegate of Portugal to the reparations conference in The Hague between 1929 and 1930. He was director and CEO of the colonial Mozambique Company from 1920 to 1933, administrator and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Railway Company from 1922 to 1933, and President of the Board the maritime transport Companhia Nacional de Navegação since 1936.[2][3]

He was Ambassador of Portugal in London from 1933 to 1935.[4]

From 1937 until 1950 he was director of the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra

He was again Ambassador to London from 1950 to 1953, member of the National Board of the Merchant Navy in 1940, President of the Center for Economic Studies since 1944, member of the NATO Supplementary Board 1950-52, where he represented Portugal on many formal occasions[5]

After his retirement he maintained for a short period (1958) the presidency of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Central Bank, Banco de Portugal.[3]
