Senegal is a nation state in West Africa.
Background
| The Senegalese island of Goree is, by all accounts, paradise. The UNESCO World Heritage Site with a dark history of slaving has recently been blighted by a new problem: it has become a haven for paedophilia. |
Former French colony. Senegal has been a valuable international partner for peace and democracy since its independence in 1960 — one of few nations in Africa that has never suffered a military coup. At home, Senegal has used its constitution, regular elections and peaceful transfers of government authority to build a democracy rooted in a social consensus that respects communal and religious pluralism.[1] According to estimates by the UN, some 40 per cent of the people are living in poverty. This particularly affects people in the Casamance region in southern Senegal.[2]
