ApsaraDB RDS:Use DMS to log on to an ApsaraDB RDS instance

Last Updated:Jun 24, 2025

This topic describes how to log on to an ApsaraDB RDS instance by using Data Management (DMS).

Prerequisites

You log on to DMS by using your Alibaba Cloud account or a RAM user that has the required database permissions.

Background information

DMS offers an integrated solution that supports data management, schema management, user authorization, security audit, trend analysis, data tracking, business intelligence (BI) charting, and performance analysis and optimization.

Procedure

  1. Go to the Instances page. In the top navigation bar, select the region in which the RDS instance resides. Then, find the RDS instance and click the ID of the instance.

  2. In the upper-right corner of the page, click Log On To Database to go to the quick logon page of DMS.

  3. On the Log On To Instance page of DMS, select an Access Method and a Control Mode.

    Parameter

    Description

    Access Method

The method used to access the RDS instance through DMS. This topic uses Username & Password as an example.

    • Username & Password: Log on by using a database account that has permissions on the destination database and the password of the account.

      Note

For information about how to create an account, see Create an account.

    • KMS Credential: Select an RDS credential created in KMS to log on to the database.

    Note
    • When you log on to an RDS instance by using the KMS Credential access method, DMS automatically enables Security Collaboration for the instance free of charge.

    • You can also click Enable Security Collaboration With One Click, enter the account and password, and enable Security Collaboration for the instance free of charge to implement secure and controllable password-free logon.

    Control Mode

DMS provides three instance-level control modes. You can select a control mode based on your business requirements.

    • Flexible Management

    • Stable Change

    • Security Collaboration

  4. After you log on, refresh the page. You can then view the logged-on instance and its databases in the Logged-on Instances list on the left.

    Note

If Security Collaboration is enabled, you can view the logged-on instance and its databases in Password-free Instances on the left.

    • In the DMS console, you can switch between databases only by double-clicking the destination database. The USE command is not supported.

    • If the instance exists but the destination database is not found after the instance is expanded, the following issues may have occurred:

      • The logon account does not have access permissions on the destination database: You can go to the Account Management page of the RDS instance details page to manually modify the account permissions.

      • The directory cannot be displayed because the metadata is not synchronized: Move the pointer over the instance to which the destination database belongs and click the image button on the right of the instance name to refresh the database list and display the destination database.

To quickly synchronize the table schema of a database, you can use the empty database initialization feature of DMS.

Note
  • In addition to logging on to DMS from the RDS console, you can also log on to the DMS console to directly register an RDS instance. After the instance is registered, you can quickly log on to the database from the DMS console.

  • If you reset the account password, you need to log on to DMS again.

Change the database account used for logon

  • If you have logged on to an RDS instance by using Username & Password:

    1. In the Logged-on Instances list in the DMS console, right-click the ID or name of the instance.

    2. Select Switch Account.

    3. In the logon dialog box that appears, enter the new database account and password to log on.

  • If you have logged on to an RDS instance by using Security Collaboration:

    1. In the Password-free Instances list in the DMS console, right-click the ID or name of the instance.

    2. Select Edit Instance.

    3. In the Edit Instance dialog box that appears, select Security Collaboration - Manual for Access Method, and enter the new database account and password to log on.
