"Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" lyrics

"Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)"

I once had a girl
Or should I say
She once had me

She showed me her room
Isn't it good
Norwegian wood

She asked me to stay
And she told me to sit anywhere
So I looked around
And I noticed there wasn't a chair

I sat on a rug
Biding my time
Drinking her wine

We talked until two
And then she said
"It's time for bed"

She told me she worked in the morning
And started to laugh
I told her I didn't
And crawled off to sleep in the bath

And when I awoke
I was alone
This bird had flown

So I lit a fire
Isn't it good
Norwegian wood

John Lennon said of this song in an interview with David Sheff, "I was trying to write about an affair without letting my wife know I was having one. ...so I was trying to be sophisticated in writing..., but in such a smoke-screen way that you couldn't tell."
Paul McCartney said to Barry Miles about the origin of the song's title, "Norwegian wood. It was pine really, cheap pine. But it's not as good a title, 'Cheap Pine', baby..."
While recording this song John Lennon couldn't get the right sound for it. At one moment in the studio he asked George Harrison to play a part of the melody on a sitar, which George began to be interested in. George learned how to play that piece, and the song was recorded as the first rock-band song with a sitar.
About the inclusion of the sitar George Harrison said that it was "quite spontaneous", adding, "We miked it up and put it on and it just seemed to hit the spot".
This track wasn't the first one for The Beatles to feature a sitar: an instrumental medley of songs "A Hard Day's Night", "Can't Buy Me Love" and "I Should Have Known Better" performed on a sitar, tablas, flute and finger cymbals was included in the USA release of their album "Help!".
"Norwegian Wood" inspired Haruki Murakami to write a book with the same title.
