Select Bitcoin

Pick Bitcoin (BTC) as the wallet you want to create. You can add wallets for other supported coins in the same app whenever you need them.

Secure and back up your wallet

Turn on the passcode and biometric protection your device supports, then complete the backup in the app so you can restore access with your custom password if you lose or replace your phone.

A Bitcoin wallet is an app or device that manages the keys used to access and spend your BTC. Your bitcoin stays recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain; the wallet holds the private keys that prove those coins are yours, and generates the addresses you use to receive them.

Are Bitcoin wallets free?

The Bitcoin.com Wallet is free to download, and creating a wallet costs nothing. You still pay a Bitcoin network fee when you send BTC — that fee goes to the Bitcoin network rather than to us. Hardware wallets are separate physical devices and have their own cost.

How do I create a Bitcoin wallet?

Download the Bitcoin.com Wallet, open the app and create a new wallet, select Bitcoin, then secure and back it up. You can receive or transfer BTC into it straight afterwards. The five steps are set out in full further up this page.

Is the Bitcoin.com Wallet self-custodial?

Yes. Your private keys are generated and held on your own device, so you control your BTC. No one else, including Bitcoin.com, can access or move your funds.

What happens if I lose my phone?

As long as you completed your wallet backup, you can install the app on a new device and restore access with your custom password. Without that backup, no one — including Bitcoin.com — can recover the wallet for you, which is why backing up straight away matters.

Can I have multiple Bitcoin wallets?

Yes. You can create more than one Bitcoin wallet in the app, and keep wallets for other supported coins alongside them. Some people use separate wallets to keep everyday spending apart from longer-term savings.

What's the difference between a Bitcoin wallet and an exchange?

A self-custody Bitcoin wallet keeps the private keys in your hands. An exchange is a custodial service: it holds your BTC on your behalf, so you depend on it for access and rely on its security. That difference in who controls the keys is why many people move BTC they intend to keep into a wallet they control.

What is a Bitcoin Wallet?

A Bitcoin wallet is an app, device or other tool that manages the private keys used to access and spend your BTC. The bitcoin itself is not stored inside the wallet. It remains recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain, while the wallet gives you control over the keys needed to move it.

Your wallet also generates Bitcoin wallet addresses. These are the addresses you share when you want to receive BTC. When you send Bitcoin, your wallet uses your private keys to authorize the transaction.

There are two main custody models:

Self-custody wallets let you control your own private keys.

Custodial wallets are managed by an exchange or other provider that controls the keys for you.

Keep control of your Bitcoin

Self-custody means there is no bank, exchange or support desk holding the keys for you. That gives you direct control over your BTC, but it also makes good backup and device security essential. Complete the wallet’s supported backup process as soon as you create it, protect your phone with a passcode or biometrics, and keep both the wallet app and operating system up to date.

Your recovery credentials and private keys should stay private. Never share them with customer support, someone offering to “verify” your wallet, or anyone contacting you unexpectedly. Download the Bitcoin.com Wallet only from official sources, and be especially cautious when a message creates urgency or asks you to act quickly.
