As part of the reform of the Union Customs Code, the future home of the forthcoming EU Customs Authority is under discussion. Following the October 2025 agreement on selection criteria, nine Member States submitted bids to host the agency. With the Commission’s assessments now published, IMCO held a Question-and-Answer session for 28 January 2026, allowing Members of the European Parliament to scrutinise candidates and their submitted applications.
SHEIN attended the 27 January 2026 meeting following repeated invitations in recent months that the company had previously declined. The appearance came amid heightened parliamentary focus on online marketplaces and their compliance with EU product safety, consumer protection, and online platform rules, as IMCO Members intensified oversight of the Commission’s enforcement actions within the single market.
The IMCO Committee held an exchange of views titled 'Labelling requirements: How to overcome fragmentation of the Single Market to the benefit of consumers” on 27 January 2026. The discussion focused on how differing national product labelling and recycling rules affect manufacturers and consumers across the EU, highlighting the challenges of compliance and the potential impact on the Single Market.
IMCO held an exchange of views on 26 January on the risks posed to minors by sexualised AI-generated content. The discussion examined whether EU laws – particularly the Digital Services Act – provide sufficient tools to address these challenges. Members also focused on consumer protection, digital regulation, and the EU’s framework for safeguarding minors online. TikTok and X (Grok) were invited to participate but were unable to attend.
The European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (IMCO) is progressing key work to make the online world safer for young Europeans. The report - Protection of Minors Online - has been approved by a plenary vote in November 2025, while now MEPs are working on an Opinion titled Impact of social media and the online environment on young people. This is expected to face an IMCO committee vote in February 2026 and in the lead committee CULT in April 2026.
