Statement by Reinhold Lopatka, Chair of the DARP Delegation
Statement on Israel's attack on Hamas targets in Qatar
"I firmly condemn yesterday's Israeli strike targeting a residential area in Doha that resulted in the loss of lives, including a Qatari security officer. This act represents a dangerous escalation that directly threatens fragile diplomatic efforts underway.
Such actions are a direct attack on ongoing diplomatic efforts and pose a grave threat to regional stability. They undermine the essential role of Qatar as a mediator and send the wrong signal at the very moment when the international community should be rallying behind diplomacy and de-escalation.
As Chair of the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with the Arab Peninsula, I express our full solidarity with the authorities and the people of Qatar, whose role as a mediator must be safeguarded.
We call for respect of international law, an end to such escalations, and a renewed focus on negotiations. Peace, de-escalation, and the protection of civilians must remain the overriding priorities."
Reinhold Lopatka, Chair for the Delegation for relations with the Arab Peninsula, conveys his full solidarity with the government and citizens of Qatar, while expressing deep concern over the Gulf region situation, including the 23 June Iranian missile strikes on the Al Udeid Air Base.
