Cohesion, agriculture and social policies
Structural policy aims to foster economic, social and territorial cohesion, that is, to reduce economic and social differences between regions and countries of the EU. The policies achieve this by supporting job creation, social inclusion, sustainable development and improvements to people’s quality of life. Regional policies also aim to reduce disparities and strengthen cohesion between regions. The common agricultural policy supports farmers’ livelihoods, promotes food security and encourages sustainable agricultural practices. The common fisheries policy aims to ensure that fisheries and aquaculture are sustainable in the long term, while protecting jobs and incomes in coastal communities. In transport, the EU focuses on connectivity, market integration and the development of the Trans-European Transport Network. Sustainable mobility is also of increasing importance. Employment and social policies improve equal opportunities and access to the labour market, promote fair working conditions and achieve better social protection and inclusion. The EU also contributes to housing policy, particularly through environmental, cohesion and social initiatives.
