My vote on the Return Regulation is grounded in the conviction that the EU urgently needs a more coherent and effective common framework on returns. I believe we need to restore trust in the migration and asylum system by ensuring that legitimate return decisions are effectively implemented. The current situation of generalised disregard for these decisions is untenable.
However, my vote is not without reservations, namely concerning the safeguards surrounding the return process and the cooperation with third countries. I am also concerned about the fragmented national approaches that remain in spite of the jurisdictional effects of a regulation.
My vote in favour therefore reflects a choice to engage and improve. I remain committed to working to strengthen procedural guarantees, monitoring and accountability mechanisms, so that efficiency in returns does not come at the expense of human dignity.
