IBBY Italia was one of the first sections of IBBY. Established in 1953, after two breaks in membership it resumed activities in 2006 with the support of founding partners, including Sala Borsa Ragazzi and the BCBF, and counts on a multiprofessional community of active members.

It promotes the work of the best Italian authors, illustrators, translators and publishers with nominations to prestigious international awards (including H.C. Andersen, IBBY Honour List and Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities, BIB, ALMA); the IBBY Italia Choice, a biannual selection of the best children's books published in Italy; a Library of Legality, to spread the culture of legality among the young generation in collaboration a network of non-profit national institutions; and collaborates with the Italian network Born to Read and AIB on the selection of a multilingual bibliography for toddlers, now extending to primary school. In collaboration with IBBY International and the local administration, it set up the first library on the island of Lampedusa and continues to promote a biannual Silent Books selection.
