Dr. Shahzad is working as a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Northumbria University (NU), Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Singapore (2014) and a BSc from the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore, Pakistan (2007). He is a Chartered Engineer from the Engineering Council UK and a Fellow of AdvanceHE UK. Dr. Shahzad led the renewable energy and water generation research lab and education at Northumbria University. He conducts multidisciplinary research on the water-energy-environment nexus and trains the next generations of scientists capable of developing innovative solutions for sustainable water and cooling production, renewable energy harvesting, and smart grid integration and control strategy for process optimization.

Global energy demand is expected to grow 47% by 2050, with oil remaining the number one source of energy. Renewables make up 27% of the global energy mix, as predicted by the International Energy Agency (IEA). To achieve IEA’s 2050 Net Zero targets, the electricity sector needs to reduce global emissions by nearly three-quarters. Even though renewables installations are expanding quickly, there is not enough to satisfy a strong rebound in global electricity demand. This will result in a sharp rise in the use of fossil fuel electricity generation that risks pushing carbon dioxide emissions. This book presents a comprehensive overview of energy efficiency, alternative energy resources, and process optimization for future sustainability.
