Youth Worker, CEO, Cyclist | Celebrating 22 Years With Bikes Not Bombs - From Participant to Executive Leader
Skills are the foundation of freedom! I was thrilled to see the Boston Globe Media recently highlight the critical vocational work happening within the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services (DYS). Seeing our Earn-A-Bike program featured alongside other vital trades reminds me why this partnership is so essential. I know firsthand the power of being given a chance to lead. Starting as a youth apprentice at Bikes Not Bombs changed the trajectory of my life—it’s where I discovered that I had the agency to build my own future. Today, we are proud to bring that same opportunity into DYS facilities. When a young person builds a bike from the frame up, they realize they have the power to fix what is broken. By teaching justice-involved youth how to true a wheel or rebuild a drivetrain, we aren’t just teaching mechanics—we are providing a pathway to economic mobility. We are proud to partner with DYS to ensure that every young person, regardless of their circumstances, has access to: 🌿 💼 Green Job Training: Preparing for a sustainable career path. 🧠 🛠️ Dignity & Patience: The mental discipline of mechanical problem-solving. 🚲 ⚖️ Mobility Justice: Providing the physical tools to navigate their community upon reentry. So grateful for our Skill Up partners at DYS, especially Commissioner Cecely Reardon, Kimberly Rowe-Cummings, and Thaddeus Pritchard III among others for sharing our vision of a more equitable Boston where youth leadership is at the center. And a big shoutout to BNB's DYS Program Coordinator, Neil Decoteau Jr. for making a big impact in such a short time leading the program on site.
