Why is recovery a matter of luck? I've been asking that since I was diagnosed with anorexia at ten years old, cycling through care that didn't work, until my family found something that did. I had every advantage, and recovery still came down to luck. That’s never sat right with me. This week, the National Eating Disorders Association honored me with their Inspire Award, and I accepted it on behalf of everyone who's made it possible to start answering that question differently. My co-founder, Erin Parks, Ph.D. Our Equipsters. The families who've trusted us with their kids. The clinicians who stayed in this field when it would have been easier to leave. And every patient who chooses recovery on the hardest days. What still keeps me up is the fact that eating disorders carry one of the highest mortality rates of any mental illness, and most people who need care still don't get it. Communities of color, men and boys, people in large bodies, or people in rural areas are too often missed, misdiagnosed, or told this isn't an illness when it absolutely is. We won't stop until every one of them knows care is for them, too. Awards are nice, but the work is what matters. We're going to keep at it until recovery reaches every person who needs it. 💙
