Those who save lives cannot become targets. In Gaza, Sudan or Ukraine, humanitarian workers are being attacked while trying to reach people in need. In South Sudan alone, 36 humanitarian workers have lost their lives this year. This World Humanitarian Day, we stand with humanitarians everywhere. Their protection and safe, unimpeded access are non-negotiable. The EU is one of the world's largest humanitarian donors and we are determined to stay the course. Security threats do not always look like threats. Hybrid threats such as cyberattack can bring down essential services. Sabotage can damage the infrastructure we rely on every day. Disinformation can manipulate public debate. Supply chains and energy can become tools of geopolitical pressure. Criminal networks traffic drugs, weapons and people across borders. Different methods. One common challenge: protecting Europe's security, stability and prosperity in an increasingly complex world. The EU is adapting, strengthening defence readiness, protecting critical infrastructure, countering foreign interference and working with partners to disrupt criminal networks. Threats are evolving. So must Europe.

Turns out, diplomacy has receipts. From €220.2 billion in support for Ukraine to over 40 trade agreements and 12 Security and Defence Partnerships, and many more examples, the numbers show what diplomacy looks like when relationships turn into action. From your plate to your passport, diplomacy is closer than you think.

2002 gave us two great things: the Spider-Man film and the International Criminal Court. Spider-Man showed us a hero who does the right thing even when it comes at a personal cost. The ICC pursues justice even when it is difficult. For the EU, the International Criminal Court is the cornerstone of the international criminal justice system. That is why we stand firmly behind the ICC, its independence and its ability to investigate and prosecute the world’s most serious crimes free from pressure, intimidation or interference. Our support is political, diplomatic and financial. Because accountability is essential to justice. And justice is essential to lasting peace.

Human rights and democracy are in retreat worldwide. The EU is not retreating with them. Throughout 2025, we continued to defend human dignity, justice and accountability, working with partners and civil society around the world. From supporting more than 10,000 human rights defenders through ProtectDefenders.eu to deploying seven election observation missions, advancing access to health and supporting accountability from Ukraine to Afghanistan, the EU remained a steady and reliable partner. Because peace does not last without accountability. And justice is not a privilege for some, but a right for all. Today marks the sixth year since the fraudulent presidential elections in Belarus. Then, the democratic expression of hundreds of thousands of Belarusians was met with unprecedented force and violence. The EU stands with Belarusian people for a free, democratic, sovereign and independent Belarus. Read the statement: https://lnkd.in/ey9YvreK

Think bigger. EU diplomacy connects Europe with its neighbours and partners around the world. It helps make Europe safer, bring countries closer and turn shared goals into action. Sometimes, it means countries working together to protect human rights, projects bringing clean water to children or communities standing up for their values. A reminder that EU diplomacy does not fit in one frame.
