About us
Protecting public health and the drinking water supply for millions of people takes the expertise of hundreds of specially skilled and dedicated employees. The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) is a highly regarded national leader in wastewater treatment, flood management, and green infrastructure. MMSD is a regional governmental agency serving over one million people in Greater Milwaukee. Our mission is to protect public health and the environment through world-class, cost-effective water resource management, leadership, and partnership. Join our diverse team and support your community while protecting our environment. A recipient of the U.S. Water Prize and many other awards, we are most proud of our record for capturing and cleaning 98.5% wastewater, since 1994, from our 29 communities in a 423-square-mile area. Many metropolitan areas struggle to capture and clean the national goal of 85% of all the rain and wastewater that enters their sewer systems.

To summarize the large amount of data collected each year, MMSD's Freshwater Resources Monitoring group produces an annual report that highlights water quality in Southeastern Wisconsin. Monitoring these parameters together provides a comprehensive picture of water quality, identifying potential issues, including risks to human health and habitat degradation. Nature has always been one of our greatest partners in protecting water. 💧 Check out Raindrop from the Walton Family Foundation, which explains how natural solutions help keep our water and communities healthy. In Episode 2, their nature-powered superhero, voiced by Rainn Wilson, explores how wetlands, cover crops, and even beavers play an important role in storing, filtering, and protecting water.
Nature is pretty good at solving problems. 💧 Raindrop is back to show how it works. In Episode 2, our favorite nature-powered superhero (voiced by Rainn Wilson) dives into the ways nature already protects water and communities—from wetlands that store and filter water to cover crops and even beavers doing their thing. Turns out, some of the smartest solutions are already out there. We just have to work with them 🌱 ▶️ Watch here: https://lnkd.in/g5KPyN86 Join us again when Raindrop returns for a deep dive on our oceans in the final episode! 🪸🐟 Special thanks to our partners working to protect water: 💙 National Wildlife Federation 💙 Nature Is Nonpartisan

WANTED: For proper disposal. MMSD’s water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove the household chemicals and compounds we collect at the Household Hazardous Waste drop-off sites. If disposed of incorrectly, they can get into Lake Michigan, our source of drinking water. Three MMSD Home HazMat collection sites are open all year for Milwaukee County residents (no businesses). We're excited to share vibrant renderings bringing the St. Marcus Elim Urban Oasis to life in Milwaukee's Historic Brewers Hill neighborhood. This spring, construction begins on a vacant lot, transforming it into a green gathering space rooted in a simple but powerful idea: that church members, students and neighbors who might never cross paths otherwise deserve a shared space to come together. Through our Fresh Coast Green Communities program, we’re working with Greenprint Partners to create a place where St. Marcus Lutheran Church, St. Marcus School and the surrounding community can gather, connect and grow alongside one another — with nature-based play equipment, raised garden beds, a teaching stage, a butterfly garden and green infrastructure managing over 90,000 gallons of stormwater.
