Re-Place EU Project

𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 – 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 In October 2025, project partners Elīna Apsīte-Beriņa (University of Latvia), Víctor Jiménez Barrado and Juan Manuel Parreño Castellano (University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) held a bilateral meeting as part of the Visual Research Taskforce. The discussion focused on developing joint visual research ideas and exploring 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 “𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁-𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱” 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 through innovative visual storytelling. This collaboration contributes to the ongoing creation of the project’s web documentary and strengthens cross-country cooperation between the Latvian and Spanish teams. Collecting visual evidence serves as a methodological tool for documenting place identity, revealing the spatial, cultural, and infrastructural features that shape everyday experiences. 📸 𝗥𝗲-𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲’𝘀 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 Since last spring, the Re-Place consortium has conducted 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝟭𝟮 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲, combining traditional interviews with 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀 — photography and film — to explore how people live, move, and make sense of their surroundings. Through six key themes, the visual research campaign invites us to see these areas differently. Too often, so-called “left-behind” places are portrayed in simplistic or stereotypical ways. 📍 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 & 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 On emptiness “If the news photographer romanticized and aestheticized ruins, owners of single farmsteads, rural residents, and local government officials exhibited different affective orientations. For them, the ruins were not only nostalgic objects of the past and the past’s futures but also harbingers of the dystopian futures inherent in the present. They did not observe but rather actively lived the pasts and futures that these ruins both enabled and foreclosed”, in “Emptiness and its futures, Staying and leaving as tactics of life in Latvia”, written by Dace Dzenovska (2018) Much as in Dzenovska’s work, we have also taken photographs and videos of “emptiness”, ruins, barren lands, abandoned businesses and innumerable signs informing the houses were for sale. 📍 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐮𝐬𝐞 The 𝐑𝐞-𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 has broadly assessed the state and accessibility of infrastructures in the areas under study. Some infrastructures are more related to conventional development – agricultural, business or service-related. Some infrastructures instead sustain a quality of life and community development. In this series of images, we explore the way we – as fieldwork workers – use the existing infrastructures. Could we use the bus to move around?
