Volumetric Video: The Next Frontier in Media-Tech Distribution The rise of volumetric video is more than a technical milestone—it’s a signal that the future of content distribution is shifting toward spatial media. Unlike traditional flat video, volumetric video captures real-world scenes in full 3D, enabling six degrees of freedom (6DoF). Users can move through video as if it were a physical space. This unlocks immersive experiences for XR, telepresence, training, and virtual production. But here’s the strategic layer: distribution supremacy in this new era won’t just be about bandwidth—it’ll hinge on compression standards, interoperability, and platform readiness. Standards like MPEG V3C, V-PCC, and MIV, led by innovators like InterDigital and Philips, are laying the groundwork for scalable, real-time volumetric delivery. Without them, volumetric content remains a lab experiment. Media-tech takeaway: As volumetric video matures, the battle for distribution dominance will intensify.
