Spotify's background coding agent 🪿Honk got a lot of attention last month. But the real story is the platform behind it — Backstage and Fleet Management form the context layer and control plane for AI-driven automation across Spotify. Watch our on-demand webinar to learn how we built Honk — and how the Software Catalog, Soundcheck, Fleetshifts, and AiKA help us enable complex migrations at scale: 📺 https://hubs.li/Q045zVhX0 🤖🪿🚀

“When we tried to roll out [our first golden path] to the company, we got a lot of push back and resistance” — Mingdao Lu Last week, Tom Fazakas and Mingdao Lu from Volvo Group joined our February Community Session to give us an inside look at how one of the world's largest manufacturing companies drove Backstage adoption through developer happiness: 📺 https://hubs.li/Q044DW6P0 After their initial golden paths approach met resistance — too rigid, too top-down — the team turned not to a tech guru, but to Bruce Lee. His philosophy of "be water" became a guiding principle, shaping a customer-centric mindset focused on the power of adaptability and meeting teams where they are. By listening to their customers, they were able to zero in and address acute developer experience issues — like taking an access provisioning process that used to take “days or even weeks” and reducing it to a few clicks in a self-service Backstage Software Template. Once developers saw the value firsthand, adoption took on a life of its own — with 70% of templates now contributed by teams outside the central platform group. Watch the full presentation at the link above to hear how they balanced developer freedom with promoting standards, and how a little flexibility can go a long way in driving transformation at scale. 🛻🦫🚀

Working in a regulated industry like finance, health, or gaming? 🏦🏥🎰 Spotify Portal delivers enterprise-grade capabilities out of the box — like Audit Logs — to help you meet regulatory requirements while giving your teams the operational visibility they need to investigate incidents and maintain accountability. Portal Audit Logs is a standardized, durable logging system that records who did what, when, and where across Portal. It captures critical user‑initiated actions — such as RBAC changes, configuration updates, and scaffolder executions — and makes them available through a secure, queryable API. Watch this quick demo video from Spotify developer advocate Stuart Clark to see how easy it is to set up Audit Logs inside Spotify Portal: 📺 https://hubs.li/Q044p5fY0 Ready for a closer look at the enterprise-ready Spotify Portal? Operating your own Backstage instance can mean owning a long list of responsibilities — infrastructure, upgrades, security, reliability, workflow health, observability, compliance, and more.🛠️ For companies that don’t have the resources for that level of investment, there’s Spotify Portal — our fully managed, hosted SaaS solution for Backstage. It gives teams the power and flexibility of Backstage without the work of running and maintaining it themselves — and with Spotify’s operational experience built in.🚀 In our latest blog post, we explain how Spotify runs Backstage-as-a-Service at scale, and how those operational learnings are built directly into Spotify Portal. The result is an enterprise-ready platform that frees your teams to focus on improving developer experience instead of managing infrastructure. Read more on our blog: 📖 https://hubs.li/Q041-bVS0 Ready to get the value of Backstage without running it yourself? "Our engineers are now able to execute fleet-wide migrations at a pace that simply wasn’t possible before.” — Max Charas, Spotify This kind of AI-driven automation is the next step in platform engineering at scale. With Backstage standardizing our ecosystem and Fleet Management normalizing one-to-many changes, AI agents change who does the work — reducing significant toil while enabling large-scale transformations that weren’t practical before. Thanks for sharing our story, Anthropic! 🤖🚀
Spotify's engineering team built a background coding agent with Claude Agent SDK that handles complex migrations across their massive codebase. Engineers describe what they need in plain text—via Slack, even—and the agent takes it from there, running tests and opening pull requests. They're now merging 650+ agent-generated PRs into production each month. Read more about how they built it, and what else Claude is enabling at Spotify: https://lnkd.in/gVhivXu6

“I literally haven't written a line of code in two months, because all of that is being done for me with the agents that I use. And that is a very, very different way of thinking about it…It turned out that it wasn’t that hands-on-keyboard thing that I enjoyed. I enjoyed being able to solve problems and shipping that to users.” Spotify’s chief architect, Niklas Gustavsson, has helped lead our engineering organization through nearly 15 years of technological change — from adopting microservices, to migrating to the cloud, to automating code changes at scale — but none of these shifts have been as transformative or impactful as generative AI. Niklas joined Tobias Macey at the AI Engineering Podcast to talk about how agentic AI is already reshaping the way we build software at Spotify — and what has him so excited about this new way of working. 🎧Listen to the AI Engineering Podcast, Ep.74: “The Future of Dev Experience: Spotify’s Playbook for Organization‑Scale AI”: https://hubs.li/Q041wM3P0 Want to leverage AI like we do at Spotify?
